I'm just curious as to how she knows the Doctor... my friend feels it is him from a future regeneration, but that was squashed by me going "how would he take himself on picnics?!" Laughing

Well it's someone he's never met, therefore someone we've never met... however, it could be Rose's daughter or someone?

Suggestions anyone? Confused

I only watched the first 20 minutes but it could be that....
Dr River Song is a grown up version of the girl that keeps seeing the Library in her dream?

Possibly... however she mentions knowing him when he's much older, and taking her on picnics... then of course there's the sonic screwdriver she has that's identical to his, that he gave her.

Hmm...

Could it be that she is the daughter of his daughter....therefore jenny's daughter and his grand-daughter? Chances are that he'll meet Jenny again in future episodes when he's been regenerated and that's why she remembers him older but is so au fait with him being different and younger now? It can't be Rose's daughter as it is set in the 51st Century. I am really intrigued and thought the Library was superb. Can't wait til next week!

My first thought was that she is a future incarnation of the Doctor, I must've missed the bit about being taken on picnics, because obviously that rules it out.

She must be a future companion then, or a relative. It certainly sounds like a good episode next week!

All could be true, but saying about it's setting in time, traveling with the Doctor means time is nothing. The 51st might as well be next week as long as you have the TARDIS Laughing

But River Song specifically stated that she was from the Doctor's 'personal future', which must mean she is also a Time Traveller, because surely he can't meet somebody living a normal linear lifetime who can 'remember' his future, as it technically hasn't happened yet. (I'm getting confused...my head hurts now!)

But we're yet to know Rose's future... let's say it's destined that Rose stays with the Doctor [maybe not with the comeback we know of, but one yet to be announced], and Rose has a Child that's given a Screwdriver and a devise similar to Jack's watch...

It's very likely that Rose's daughter would then already know him, but he wouldn't know her,

It's farfetched, but this is the land of sci-fi afterall! Laughing

It's not that bad.

Suppose that River song has a 'relationship' which has lasted 10 meetings.

For the sake of argument, let's called them M1-M10.

For River, the meetings have happened in universal chronological order M1, M2 etc all the way up to M10 (let's say M10 is the library meeting).

But because the Doctor travels through time, he meets her in a different order, for example:

M10, M7, M4, M1, M3, M9, M5, M2, M6, M8

He's never met her before M10, even though it's (currently) her 'last' meeting with him. Hence she needs to check in her diary each time to see which meetings they've had.

e.g. when she checked her diary at the start of M9, she would be able to work out that M7, M4, M1, M3 had already happened (obviously M10 as well, but as that's in her future, the Doctor wouldn't tell her about that one).

That's either supremely clear now or your head is spinning even faster Wink

And, by the way, I don't believe River is Rose, Jenny, Jenny's daughter or anyone else we've met before...

She's probably just a future companion. When something like this gets everyone wondering fan theories are always more interesting then the actual conclusion. Remember "Bad Wolf"? Rolling Eyes

Yep, after watching it last night I realised how wrong I was Laughing

Could it be:

Romana? Probably not but technically she's in E-Space where Tom left her. However I can't honestly see Alex Kingston as a full time companion, isn't she still in ER? I must point out I haven't seen any ER for about five years so she may have left since I had last watched it

But surely when she said the Doctor looked young, she has to know him from some point in his future. If she had known one of his previous regenerations then that would be the Doctor's past and he would remember her.

Hmm... yes. TBH I'm still trying to work out what she is to The Doctor.

I thought it was a great episode, hopefully the second part will be just as good, the moffmeister delivers again (so far) 9/10
