How long did it take him to get a real decent recurring part after Dr Who? - approx 3 times as long as he played Dr Who - now calculators at the ready!
Calculator? Is it one of those new contraptions. I still use an abacus.

The only side i'm on is my own. I love everybody! Even TvM and Googly eyes. JM and Dusty Bones have a special place in my heart too.

I think that is in the same rumour mill as "The Doctor Has A Son" & "John Simm Will Be The Next Doctor", at least I hope it's just a rumour
As was seen in the Colin Baker reign when they took an 18 month break, it could be damaging to the show to have a break.
Regarding Tom Baker, like someone said above he did get work in the end but it took him ages to do so, Peter Davison gave up after three years, just like Patrick Troughton and both had successful careers afterwards, as did Jon pertwee although he did five years. Not sure about Colin Baker & Sylvester McCoy though.
One name that keeps being bandied (is that a word???) around is Alan Davies, Verity Lambert reckons he would be a good Doctor & would have been one of her first choices. IF he did get offered the part I hope he would take it, presonally.
