No, he's certainly not ugly on any scale. Unfortunately, his distinctive forehead, nose and hair just immediately brought to my mind John Hurt's performance of JM.
Perhaps I shouldn't have shared...!

I'll probably be castigated for this, but my first thought on seeing Matt Smith in Confidential was John Merrick - the 'Elephant Man'.

Cruel and yet very funny! I think that he has an interesting, quirky face. Quite a few people like Mary Tamm have come out and said he's a good choice.

I'm not a Dr Who fan (I've only watched one episode since it came back) but the announcement of the new Doctor has had me interested.
But what I think is really good is that the name of the actor wasn't leaked or announced in the papers before tonight and there were very few (if any) people who predicted who it would be.
That's so unusual these days

And the production team said how the hair was part of the appeal!
After all the hype.. pretty disappointed, at the moment I don't think I could take him seriously as the doctor. That interview didn't seem to do much for him... and made me even more confused as to why they chose him.

This did make me laugh.

I don't think he's ugly. Daniel Craig got similar criticism when he was cast as James Bond and then blew everybody away with his performance.
Hopefull Matt Smith will convince the doubters with his performance.

I dont think he is ugly either - I think he is quite nice actually
I dont think its essential for the Doctor to be "fit" although obviously DT is but IMO CE wasnt.

Good god no... don't forget people, this is the new, Daily-Mail-whipped-into-shape BBC. Heaven forbid their clean-cut Doctor should be anything other than white male!

Okay a little too passionate regarding the doctor's colour me thinks!
As has been quoted today in the news:

Wenger is also quoted on the subject of the much-touted casting of a black actor as the Doctor not having happened. "We saw a dozen or so people, some of them black. There was never any resistance to the idea of a black Doctor and it would have got us all sorts of headlines and brownie points, but we set out to cast the best actor for the role irrespective of ethnicity or age, and that was Matt."

Which bookies were taking bets on this? Surely too many people already knew who it was going to be.
You'd think that but the bookmakers had Patterson Joseph as the favourite and many people do put bets on this stuff, rather foolishly if you ask me.
Apparently Paddy Power only paid out £5000.

Lots of money recently has gone on an actor called Ben Whishaw. He's young and has crazy hair. Could it be him?
