I watched Ruby In The Smoke. Bloody hell I'm thick. Why didn't I recognise him sooner?

Strange - as a political animal yourself I'd have thought you'd have watched "Party Games" ??

I haven't seen that, but apparently he was in 'The Street' on BBC One, which I did watch, but don't remember him from that.

I can see how they made their decision. If you think about it, the other two major Saturday night dramas have their main star under 30. Although Jonas Armstrong is leaving Robin Hood after their third series, he is currently 28, while you got Colin Morgan and Bradley James from Merlin who are 23 & 24 respectifully.

I can understand why the casting process was seduced by Matt Smith. However i think they have made a big and major mistake...It was time for an older one. One series i suspect!

And if he is quick leaving you then have the question of the future of the Doctor as it was stated there are only 12.

Then again that didn't stop the master but he was reborn by the Time Lord high council.

Interesting to see on the iPlayer (and programmes) the episode is listed as 'The Ten Doctors'. I assume it was originally billed under this name as a red herring.

Lots of money recently has gone on an actor called Ben Whishaw. He's young and has crazy hair. Could it be him?

Which bookies were taking bets on this? Surely too many people already knew who it was going to be.

You'd think that but the bookmakers had Patterson Joseph as the favourite and many people do put bets on this stuff, rather foolishly if you ask me.

EDIT: And here is the press release
Matt Smith is the new Doctor

Laughing I was wondering when someone was going to say that, a bit early though Laughing

To be honest I'm a little bit disappointed that it isn't going to be Paterson Joseph because so many people were sure it was him that I kind of accepted him as the 11th

That been said, I'm more intrigued with an actor, who to me is virtually unknown.

Bring him on I say

Very Happy

Matt who ?

I can honestly say I've never heard of him. He doesn't even look like he's out of short trousers yet. (He also looks a bit like he's had Ben Wishaw's hair transplanted on to his head.)

In the interviews, he seemed to remind me of Russell Brand–no idea why. Nevertheless, it may work. I'll withhold judgement until he appears in 2010 (or late 2009) but I predict he'll be more of a Tom Baker-style Doctor than Tennant. My reasoning is thus:

  • his voice sounds a bit like TB's
  • I can imagine him with a fedora and a scarf
  • His hair looks like a chinchilla, where Baker's looked like a Pekinese dog that had fallen into a vat of acid

Either way, I wish him well, but I was quite surprised they didn't go for an older Doctor this time.

While i'm not going to say that it was a mistake to cast Matt Smith as i have no idea who he is, i really wanted an older doctor too. Not William Hartnell older, but someone with a bit of gravitas, something i think Matt Smith won't have. David Tennant is a very rare example of an actor who has that presence but is still quite young.
