You've obviously not been on the Doctor Who Forum then
Loads of pointless suggestions there including: That twerp from High School Musical, John McCain, Andrew Sachs, Russell Brand & Johnny Vegas to name a few. Even I joined in & suggested Andrew Lincoln, who I'd think would do a good job, Chevvy Chase & Mark and The Boy Lard

I have to say, I think the editor of the BBC christmas drama trailer is a fan of the eighth doctor adventures on Radio 7, He/She kept putting shots of David Tennant beside shots of Sheridan Smith (Lucie in the audio adventures, she'll be in Jonathan Creek). Made this fan smile a little. (Though I prefer the Charley adventures myself)

Apparently strongly rumoured to be the next doctor is:
However it's not been fully conifrmed yet, but several people on t'internet who have sources have come back with the same name.
I'd imagine we'll find out soon enough though

Er, hardly. Tennant was announced as the new Doctor on April 16th - just a few weeks after the first series had started.

There were a few rumours towards the end of Series 1, but TBH they kept it rather well under wraps til Tennant actually appeared on screen that Saturday night...

Well because of the odd way Eccleston came & went Tennant was announced very quickly. Now some have argued that it's too soon to announce the new Doctor, however Peter Davison was announced during Full Circle (late 1980) didn't appear on screen until March 1981 (for about 5 seconds after the regeneration) and his first full story wasn't until January 1982. Colin Baker I believe was announced roughly six months before season 21 aired.
I think that after The Next Doctor we'll get an announcement, not necessarily on Christmas Day but possibly a few days later

When do they usually announce who the next doctor is? I wasn't really watching Doctor Who when Christopher Ecclestone was the doctor, only started watching when Series 3 started (I catched up before then)

You are correct, much in the same vein as
I think, re the announcement if it's not around Christmas/new year it'll definitely be by April
