pad loves Dr Who, I bet he's burnt last night's episode to DVD already!
raises hand sheepishly
To be fair Pad's view is rather honest, I completely get that some people would dislike it, I did personally find the whole "towing of Earth" a bit OTT. But when you read some of the comments on the OG/DW Forums they are just ridiculous
Anyway let speculate on the Christmas Special & Series 4B (well it's not Series 5 & to be honest calling it 4B kind of helps define it seeing as it's a mini series)
Be great to see the Cybermen back especially as:
Also when do we think Tennant is going to go, at the end of 2009's Christmas special or at the end of Series 5?

Again Pad that's not aimed at yourself, you have at least given a reasonable argument as to why...

We don't know that, Johnny, unless there was something in that spoiler above.
Nothing has been announced about the 2010 series (which should be Series V; the specials next year being Series IV Ep 14+) That would make more sense for DVD box sets for those that buy.

Nah nothing in the spoiler above, just the avergae time span for a Doctor is 3-5 years. As for the specials, it's hard to say, they're going to release the boxset in November & traditionally the Christmas special is the first of the upcoming series, I think if anything they'll put them in the Series 5 boxset of have Christmas 2008-Christmas 2009 as the boxset, it remains to be seen.

Means jack ****. Doctor stints have sofar ranged from 1 episode (
to 7 years (4). The 80s were a time when the programme was let down badly by its production team, and when regeneration was the only way of keeping it fresh and interesting. Chris Ecclestone could have stayed a bit longer if he hadn't succumbed to the mythical fear of typecasting. There's no reason why Tennant can't stay on for at least another 3 or 4 seasons.
If anything, speculating on his replacement - especially some of the bull we've read this week in the chatter press - is more likely to force change where change isn't needed, and undermine Tennant. And that could seriously harm the series, and prematurely produce the ret-con that will inevitably come once Dr 13 is ready to regenerate.
I am not sorry to see the back of RTD - I'm as liberal as they come but the endless proselytising about homosexuality wore a little thin after Jack's first appearance. His writing was also incredibly sloppy in places; I'm pleased to say I was happy and satisfied with Saturday's episode... the Osterhagen Key was a conceivable defence mechanism... I was a bit annoyed with the audience-pandering Billie return, after it was established that she was trapped...turned out she wasn't..... is she now?
And the Doctor giving his "renegade" double as a present to Rose -- is that ethical? What does the Doctor Double have to say about that? He is in essence the same man, so to go from a travelling timelord playing life and death with the universe to househusband and lover to someone 960 years younger than him....I dunno.
I'd also prefer a return to maybe in a season of 13 episodes there should be 4 mini-arcs, as opposed to standalone stories. It's an American thing that RTD has copied - Star Trek, Buffy, Angel - all had 45-minute eps with the occasional 2-parter and the big finish to the series. Buffy/Angel had story-arcs too, and Buffy was ultimately guilty of too much deus ex machina, or MacGuffins. I think for Dr Who, self-contained multi-parters work better over standalones...or maybe standalones are the only way to go in this 21st Century world.

Oh I know it means bugger all but it's just their average lifespan. Davsion gave up after his third year because he didn't like his second year, however he wished he had stayed on for a 4th year because he liked his third year so much.
Grade didn't like C. Baker so the poor sod didn't get a chance, however he was mates with McCoy so regardless of how poor the show was by that time Grade didn't care. IIRC Season 24 did worse than Season 23 yet Grade hailed it a success, even though Season 24 is regarded as one of the worst if not worst.
Again Teannant could survive past five years but that depends on how they develop him, I mean I hope we don't have another Season 17 situation again, where Tom had no heart in it & it reflected on screen.

traditionally the Christmas special is the first of the upcoming series
Really?? since when?? Kylie's Xmas special titanic story did not set up Donna's return in any way. Surely TRADITIONALLY the LAST episode sets up the christmas special (Titanic crashing the tardis, Donna in a wedding dress in the tardis).
David Tennant LOVES playing the Doctor. That's obvious in any interview I've seen with him. It's his dream job. Fair play, let him have a year off, but I don't think we're at a stage to speculate that he's only got next year's specials or one more series in him.
