He's leaving after the Christmas Special, which contradicts earlier news of him signing up for Series 8. Jenna-Louise Colman is staying, which should placate the fans a little.

My guesses for the next Doctor are Richard O'Brien, Gary Oldman, and Kathy Burke.

Why is it always either a Doctor or a companion that leaves, but never both at the same time?

To my knowledge, its only happened in the classic series at the end of the Troughton era, where all the regular cast left.

At least 'Sad Trekkie' sister will be pleased, as she prefered Tennant!

Of course we did get a new Doctor and campion at the start of the new Matt Smith era. But the reason surely is because that wouldn't be a natural transition and you want to keep some continuity and a face the viewer is familiar with so it's not totally different.

So we get the very last new Doctor at the end of the special?

It's a 12 regenerations limit, meaning 13 doctors - and it's only been suggested.

EDIT: Of course, that would be number 13 is John Hurt is playing another incarnation.

I think the 12 Doctors limit has been debunked somewhat.

what did there do to solve this? I was lead to believe it would mean the doctor son appearing.

Matt was suppose to have stay until 2015, why is he leaving a year early?

Generally it is better to keep one thing when moving to a new era, to maintain a sense of continuity. When Matt Smith took over, it came with a new companion, new style, and new show-runner

They made a joke about it in an episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures, suggesting that a limit doesn't exist.

He had signed up for Series 8, lasting until the middle of next year, but it seems he's simply reneged on that deal.

...comes up every time. Not that it's really a barrier, but he's already been in it. Don't see that he has the range, either, really.

Second's companions left when he did. Fourth got two new companions in his regeneration episode, and Fifth had a companion refresh one episode before.

Nyssa actually debuted in the previous serial. Don't confuse serial and episode.
