It's going to be 2:1, which is barely different from 16:9. Like I said, if someone swapped a 16:9 display for a 2:1 one, I don't think most people would notice. The only reason most people notice at all is that it leaves 1/9th of their 16:9 screens black (or even less if their TV is set for possible overscan, as most do by default), and makes them go "ooh, wide(r)screen!"

Unless you're going to go the whole hog and do something like 2.35:1 I don't really see the point (but even then it only looks "cinematic" because it's what we're used to seeing at the cinema. It isn't intrinsically any more immersive). I think I might watch with it zoomed to fill my screen just to spite them Wink

Isn't 18:9 / 2:1 now the standard format for Amazon and Netflix? Perhaps that's one reason for the change.

A lot of devices such as smartphones like the iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy S/Note series are 2:1 as well.

The Galaxy S8 / S9 / Note 8 / Note 9 are 18.5:9 / 39:18 I believe.

From Sunday 14th October, I wonder what the schedule will be like, as Dr Who will revert to a 50 minute format. Will this mean:

17:30: Countryfile
18:30 Doctor Who
19:20: Strictly Come Dancing
20:00 Still Open All Hours

OK, I thought they would want to keep the 7.15pm slot for the Strictly Results, so not to go up against the failing X Factor. Or is X Factor having no Sunday shows this year?

Anything that shakes up Sunday nights on BBC1 is welcome. They have become so pedestrian and stale. Countryfile is not a show that should be in a primetime Sunday viewing slot, certainly not week after week without a break as it has been. Time for it to shift, and earlier at 5pm seems more apt. Having said that I do regret that Dr.Who has shifted to Sunday night.

Countryfile does attract 5 million viewers each week, and more often in 2017 it beat the Sunday night X Factor Results show in the ratings.

The viewing figures say otherwise.

If X Factor is failing, then why would they care about it going up against it - they'd expect to beat it!

You may actually be right, apart from the 8pm slot. I noticed Antiques Roadshow's synopsis for yesterday said 24/26, meaning there's two episodes left and DW has bumped it out of it's timeslot. Still Open All Hours is just a filler.

Well I've walked away from that episode feeling very positive about how things are heading! Really like Jodie Whittaker as an actress and was really hoping she'd continue to be good here, and she absolutely was. Nice to see some proper backstory to the companions, and a Doctor Who that is less afraid of death than it definitely was towards the Matt Smith era.

Was well shot, good new music (including the return of the Middle 8 to the end credits!), and generally just very good Doctor Who again (although I generally did like the Capaldi stuff, and definitely preferred it to the Smith years...) Sunday night is also an ideal slot - looking forward to next week!

I read elsewhere that we get new opening titles next week.
