Discovery Kids and Wings to close to form Discovery Turbo?

Information from Wikipedia and an advert on Discovery Kids (February 2007)

This site closed in March 2021 and is now a read-only archive

I noticed that an advert on yesterday on Discovery Kids quoting:

Quote:
Discovery Kids is moving from the TV to the web from 1st March

And so I decided to find some information on this:

First, I noticed that some of Discovery's channel's websites are now just showing listings and how to actually watch the channel, which is not just Discovery Kids or Wings.

Secondly, I noticed that Wikipedia state that Discovery Kids and Discovery Wings will close on 28th.

Furthermore, Wikipedia states that a new motoring channel called Discovery Turbo will take over from Kids and Wings.

Any more proof?

If true it's not very surprising. Discovery Kids and Wings were created and launch together in 2000 especially for On Digital - at the time the existing Discovery channels could not go on there because Sky had an exclusive contract for national pay TV carriage. Within a couple of years both had been ditched from the then ITV Digital and replaced with the normal Discovery Channel once it was possible.

Wings quickly became pretty dull and will be no real loss, Kids was more promising but it's centrepiece was various Steve Irwin programmes. Since his death they've not really found anything decent to replace it.

Bizarrely it's resorted to showing Pete Watermans series on trains recently!

Do Discovery show any programmes in widescreen? I would presume so, seeing as they have a HD service, but I have never seen any.

I personally think the whole Discovery network is in need of a bit of a refresh, Civilisation and Science in particular.

So on the 1st March, ‘Kids’ and ‘Wings’ & ‘Adventure one’ close, Turbo launches and so does ‘Nat Geo Wild’.

Anyone know the confirmed Sky Epg numbers??
As far as I know, ‘wild’ is on 528, Then ‘Animal planet’ and ‘+1’ are moving to 524 and 525 which are currently ‘wings’ and ‘HD’ Epg slots, Turbo is launching on 523 according to the message onscreen on ‘Wings’ last night so where is ‘Science’ moving to?? Are ‘science’ and ‘HD’ moving to the vacated ‘Animal planet’ slots?

Turbo is launching on EPG 523 - a dog on 'Wings' last night was flashing up every 10 minutes advertising the fact that 'Turbo' will be on Sky 523. And its widely known that Animal Planet and Disc HD are moving EPG numbers, but with 'Turbo' launching on EPG 523, that must mean 'Disc. Science' is moving???

I can't see the point of shuffling Disc. Science down the EPG, surely it's one of the more popular channels they have - certainly more so than the new Disc. Turbo which will essentially be Disc. Wings with a bit extra thrown in.

Movings channels about like this when there are only 2 pages to the Documentaries section is just going to confuse people. I've only just got used to the new EPG numbers after the last major re-shuffle by Sky. Rolling Eyes

Apparently it says in TV & Satellite Week magazine that 'Discovery Science' is moving to channel 535 with 'Discovery HD' moving to channel 536.

I think Discovery is moving Animal Planet so that it will be listed higher up the EPG than the new Nat Geo Wild.....

Noticed that Discovery have a channel called "Turbo" in the states:
http://turbo.discovery.com/

Seems to also be about cars, motor bikes etc. No "Discovery" part of the name though.
