I don't think they're the same TLC, I notice on it's Wikipedia page that in the Asia Pacific region TLC stands for 'Travel and Living Channel' and across the rest of Europe 'Travel and Living' has been replaced with 'TLC'
The only thing TLC UK in the 1990s and the current international TLC channels have in common is that they are international variants of the domestic TLC channel. But as the US TLC of the early 1990s doesn't have anything in common with the same network in 2011, that is probably where the similarities end.
I wouldn't read to much into the fact that Wikipedia is using the name "Travel and Living Channel" for TLC Asia/Pacific. It may have been used in some reports and releases when it launched, but I would be surprised if it is used regularly on-air.
The Pan-European version of Discovery Travel & Living has a broader programming range than its UK namesake, as it is Discovery's only lifestyle channel in most European countries. As Discovery are rolling out regional versions of TLC in Europe, they are mostly doing it by replacing the Pan-European T&L.
There are some exceptions. In the Netherlands, Discovery chose to make Animal Planet a daytime-only channel and using its evening space to launch TLC into a majority of Dutch homes simultaneously. In Sweden, they chose to switch Animal Planet to MPEG-4 in the terrestrial network to make room for TLC Sweden.
Anyway, that is beside my point, which was that the fact that the old TLC UK was renamed in the 1990s doesn't impact TLC's potential to be a strong brand as it currently gets launched globally.
