According to digital spy, Discovery Travel and Adventure will become Discovery Travel & Living as of Feb 1st 2005. This will probably mean new idents and a new logo. This might also mean an EPG number change on Sky Digital to the entertainment section.

Discovery Home and Leisure has renamed to just Discovery Home in the USA - will the same change occur in the UK??

Also, as of January 10th 2005 in the USA, Discovery Wings becomes Discovery Military - will the same change occur in the UK??

There was also talk a while ago of Discovery Home and Leisure becoming Discovery Real Time - will this still be happening?

There is also talk of Discovery Health becoming Discovery Home & Health!

This is all very confusing!!

Also, if the newly rebranded Discovery Travel & Living moved to the entertainment section, this would free up an EPG slot and would mean that this COULD happen:

551 Discovery Channel (remains same number)
552 Discovery Channel +1 (remains same number)
553 Discovery Civilisations (formerly Discovery Travel & Adv EPG number)
554 Discovery Civilisations +1 (a new launch)
555 Discovery Science (remains same number)
556 Discovery Science +1 (a new launch)
557 Discovery Wings

Discovery launching two new timeshifts has happened before on the same day - so this IS possible!

Also, i expect Discovery Health +1 is on the cards too!

timeshifting the civilisation, science and travel and adventure channels seems very much like a waste of bandwidth to me - the schedule is as such that a whole days programming seems to be the same 4 hours repeated until close down.

Although it seems a waste of bandwidth, it didnt stop UKTV launching UKTV History +1 which is also a 4 hour loop of programming.

Anyone found any preview of the new look yet?

Wow, that is confusing! Sadly I can't get any of those channels... Sad

John

BTW When a channel has +1 after it (e.g. Discovery Channel +1) does it mean it is one hour ahead of the normal Discovery Channel or does it mean the second Discovery Channel?

Nope, it's an hour behind the normal channel.
eg. Discovery Channel: Programme x, 8pm
then... Discovery Channel +1: Programme x, 9pm

Ah now I see the logic in it! If you miss your favourite programme on the Discovery Channel, you can watch it on Discovery Channel +1?

Clever!

Only useful if you have missed the programme by under an hour. Wink

Further info about this rebrand has been put on skydigionline:

08/01/05 Discovery readies three new channels launch
Discovery Networks Europe is to launch three lifestyle channels in the UK later this year as it aims to reach a broader audience outside the US. Discovery Travel & Living will replace existing channel Discovery Travel & Adventure and will cover architecture, design, food, style and travel. It is set to launch on 1st February. The other channels in the newly created Discovery Lifestyle Networks portfolio are to be called Discovery Real Time and Discovery Home & Health, aimed at men and women respectively. The full portfolio will roll out later in the year although it has not been confirmed whether they will replace existing channels or be launched as new brands. So far, Discovery Travel & Living has acquired a mixture of UK and network premieres for its launch schedule, including 'A Shore Thing', 'Surfing the Menu', 'Perfect Getaway' and 'Never Trust a Skinny Cook'. David Abraham, UK executive vice-president and general manager, said: "Discovery Lifestyle Networks is about delivering quality lifestyle programming that provides entertainment, escapism and inspiration in the comfort of your own home." Discovery Lifestyle Networks will complement the company's portfolio of factual channels offered outside the US, such as The Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Kids, Discovery Science, Discovery Wings and Discovery Civilisation.

I would therefore assume that:
Discovery Travel & Adventure will become Discovery Travel & Living
Discovery Home & Leisure will become Discovery Real Time
Discovery Health will become Discovery Home & Health

This rebrand went ahead today and we now have Discovery Travel & Living.

The Nurse
Well as the name suggests it seems to have basically given them a platform to show lifestyle programming, a quick look through the EPG just now reveals a mix of travel programmes and "A Place In The Sun" etc.

I hope they don't stop showing One Hit Wonderland, that was the best thing on the channel!
