Intresting thing on Wikipedia, since Directv is owned by News corp like sky:

NewsCorp only own around 37% of Sky.

Who owns the rest?
Ostensibly the public own the rest of BSkyB plc - but News Corp is the largest minority shareholder.

Yeah, I liked the way Ben said Murdoch owns just 37% of Sky - isn't that enough?! I mean, Murdoch has enough involvement himself and one of his sons heads up the operation here in the UK. Somehow I think NewsCorp have more than a large say in what Sky does don't you? Wink

It's been mooted for a very long time. There's been much speculation from journalists (and from the company itself) that DirecTV, BSkyB, Sky Italia, Sky Australia and Star would all come together to share a brand name.

Sky Global was the name being suggested, which I thought would be very cool, but it could all be a pipe dream...

As for the 37% - it's the largest single holding so therefore gives News Corp the most prominant say in the running of the company.

I've already said 28.2 degrees east is WELL over the horizon for the US. It's impossible to get it, even if your dish is a mile wide.

Surely well 'below' the horizon? If it was well over the horizon it would be possible to receive?

Some US beams can be theoretically received without using a mad sized dish (2-3m?) as they around the 5 degree elevation, but you would need to live extremely close to the west coast of Ireland.

There was someone who managed to get a very weak signal from America from the west of Ireland, it was barely watchable though but you could make out it was a testcard from Dish Network.

Yep, that's true, though it was 61.5 degrees west, which is not below the horizon for the UK.

BBC World just started a huge ad campaign in New York, with aims of getting carriage from other US-based carriers. They supposedly are near deals with several major cable (likely Time-Warner & Comcast) and satellite (DirecTV in particular) providers.

Don't have any dates yet.

If you understand what the "Horizon" actually means in terms of satellites. It also depends on where the beams are actually aimed. Astra 2D has a beam very tightly focused on the UK & Ireland- you can live practically underneath the satellite, but you wouldn't be able to recieve it if the beam is aimed somewhere else.

Indeed, communication satellites are all located above the equator, but they aren't all recievable by those on the equator (and of course if you're on the equator your dish points stright upwards!)

SO when do you think BBC World will be on Directv? I really would be happy if I had that.

Could be wrong but isn't BBC World a service all of it's own in the States? I'm not sure DirecTV would be carrying it... Confused

Um...No. PBS a half hour news program, but that's it There is BBC america, but they inly play BBC World in a three hour block. All BBc america plays is cash in the attic, changing rooms, and keeping up appearances

Ah right, sorry. Well you never know, DirecTv might carry them in the future but from what I've seen of them they're more dedicated to music programming...
