And, it's estimated, up to 500 digital terrestrial boxes or IDTVs across the Borders can't decode the BBC channels as a result.....because they are only compatible with 2k

Yep - the 2k to 8k change and the split-NIT (I think) changes that have also happened to allow Freeview to operate more robustly have taken out some very early receivers that were rushed to market (ONDigital anyone?) with 2k only silicon.

Switching to 8k allows for 24Mbs 64QAM on all muxes whilst deliver robustness similar to the 2k 18Mbs 16QAM that the BBC and NGW/Arqiva muxes used when Freeview launched (replacing the 4 previous 24Mbs 64QAM muxes used)

It is unfortunate that quite a large number of receivers will be rendered obsolete - which is why, belatedly, the digital tick scheme was introduced to ensure receiver compliance.

Was the digital tick an authentic one? If so - who did the compliance testing and can they expect a lawsuit?

I've just been into the loft, to check the carton for my lad's Digihome. My memory was faulty, what it does have is a 'Freeview Playback' stamp, but no digital tick. At least his will still be usable until March 2012 Wink

The only one I've come across so far, and I understand the style varies between channels.

Some interesting information here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcilabs/2008/11/selkirk_westlondon.html

Seems that regional opts are being backhauled and coded in London post-DSO.

This begs a couple of questions:

1) Do the regional centres control the opts under the new system? Do they still need a network feed to opt in to?

2) Does this mean that DTT opts on BBC2 or conceivably any other BBC channel on that multiplex would be possible?
