Well I'm based in the South East and I pick up Bluebell Hill (Maidstone) (often missing some BBC channels) downstairs, yet upstairs its more towards Dover (all channels).. strange. Ah well.

It's Mirror, I would say. Yeah looking at it quickly initially, it looks like it could be Blade, but I think that green was in there to throw us!

A better quality, newer, less rusty aerial, possibly (but not necessarily) with a wider channel sensitivity.
It's all a huge con really, because AFTER digital switch over the transmitter power of the digital muxes will be roughly the same as the current analogue channels.
The general rule is "if you can get it now on analogue, you'll be able to get it in digital after the switchover".
It's only the digital channels transmitted AS WELL AS analogue ones, from the same transmitter, which are at lower power than traditional analogue.
As analogue is switched off at each transmitter, they "turn the wick up" on the digital muxes.

It's the "2" from BBC 2, Asa's way of marking analogue switch off (I presume)

BBC Two in Whitehaven is tonight being replaced ITV1, and in ITV1s place, multiplex PSB1, which is like Mux 1, but with added Five.
No, Mux 1 Whitehaven is the same as Mux 1 from Pontop, Caldbeck, and Bilsdale.
There's been a special mux carrying Channel 5 DTT (on UHF Ch 49) since Aug 1st.

So people have had that available to test their boxes, though that's not the reason the transmission is there. It's there because C5 has not yet moved to a PSB mux.
That transmission is unique to this situation though, it won't be the norm at future switchovers, because C5 will share the PSB3 once DSO proper starts next year.

I'd like to have seen some of the captions put on screen. I presume the BBC 2 analogue signal was replaced by a caption from the transmitter in the intervening 7 mins before ITV1 started. Additionally a similar sort of caption from 02:07-02:36 on the former ITV1 analogue frequency explaining where ITV1 had gone (for those who had been hidong under a rock until this morning).
I don't think they would broadcast any captions on analogue. The time between the switchoff of BBC Two and the startup of ITV1 was probably used for flicking switches around the transmitter, the same goes for the old ITV1 frequency.
When they were turning of the analogue transmitters in Sweden there used to be several hours without any television service as they were moving the multiplexes around.
Btw, was there anyone who recorded the historical event? The Finnish and Swedish analogue switchoffs can be found on Youtube:
Humrous video bout the Finnish switchoff
Finnish switchoff - MTV3
Caption shown on YLE TV1 after switchoff
Swedish switchoff - SVT1
Swedish switchoff - SVT2
Swedish switchoff - TV4
Last regular closedown on SVT2

Ah, got you.
We were a bit baffled at work today by [url=http://digitaluk.co.uk/en/when/border/whitehaven-copeland/resources/00/file/The%20Copeland%20guide%20to%20Switchover.pdf#page=5]this pdf[url] on the Digital UK site which lists the channels currently available on digital: the Mux 1 channels, plus five. (I was presuming it was being remultiplexed together at the local transmitter)
Thanks for clearing that up!
