Watching a documentary about the late Ken Dodd I was reminded that he made a semi-serious bid for the Yorkshire Franchise in 1968.

Just clicked on the link to read about the history of the Yorkshire franchise, and was surprised that Yorkshire actually broadcast down into North and West Norfolk. This must be well over a hundred miles from their studios in Leeds.

That'd be the Belmont transmitter area. They were actually under Anglia until 1974.

I thought North and West Norfolk would be in the Anglia region. I couldn't understand why it would be Yorkshire. Surely Central/ATV would have been closer.

The reach of Belmont is hudge.

It's easy to think of East Anglia as in the South-east. Kings Lynn was, for instance, a Network South-east station. But when you get to North Norfolk, you're as far north as places like Nottingham, Derby, Stoke-on-Trent, Den Helder or Bremen. Heading north-west, there's just the wash and the Wainfleet fens before you get to the Lincolnshire Wolds, the Caistor High Road and Mr Strawson's Farm.

Line of sight, Belmont is probably only 45 miles from Wells. Some claim the Belmont's mast lights are visible from the Norfolk coast on a clear night.
