I hope this poll reflects the viewing figures. If it does, Ant and Dec will be axed hopefully, hoorah! ... I don't know about other people, but it's the ultimate battle between trash television and intelligent, well made television.

That's a bit daft, Ant and Dec will not be axed. However much you hate them, you simply have to accept that they are loved by millions of people. I found Doctor Who more silly and less thought provoking than Ant and Dec's Takeaway. It doesn't make me hate Doctor Who though. Both are very different programmes, but the word "intelligent" doesn't really seem to fit with either shows for me.

However, I still respect the fact that a lot of people love Doctor Who and there's a lot of interest in it's return to television. Whether the Doctor can keep people's interest is another story. I think people can have flexible enough minds to do and watch what they want (trash telly included) and still keep a healthy balance.

I would expect Dr Who to have done very well on it's first week mainly because people will want to see what this new Doctor is all about, but I would be more interested in seeing what the ratings are showing in a few weeks.

Generally I would imagine people who love both shows are more likely to watch Takeaway and see Doctor Who at a later date (either by recording or watching a repeat) because Takeaway is live and probably best enjoyed that way.

Finally (yes my rant is nearly over) I'd say this is a battle between two very different Saturday nights on two very different channels, which IMO seems more fair to the viewer than Pop Idol versus Fame Academy.

Doctor Who, to see if it was actually any good, and check if there was a special ident, naturally.

1 out of 2 ain't bad.

Don't know if anybody on here will understand this concept, but we didn't watch anything.

We had people round for a dinner party.

We've taped a thing about Windsor Castle to watch at a later date, but that's all.

Now there's an idea for a new reality show...
"Nick Harvey's Dinner Parties"
(A sort of "Houseparty" with panache!)

Yes, I watched Ant and Dec as it was LIVE. Caught the repeat of Dr Who tonight!

So, the poll here isnt representative of what actually happened up and down the country?

I wonder how the ratings will be presented in the newspapers tomorrow?

Always wondered this:
Are ratings calculated per household, per TV, or per person watching TV!? And what about us people that record one and watch it after the other one? are they taken into account at all??

And the answer to this poll from me: both - Sky+ is a wonderful thing Cool

Was that on tonight? I really want to see that! If only to see Prince Philip driving his Range Rover!

No, it was actually on Sunday evening; apologies if I made you miss it.

I was mixing my days up, having had the discussion with 'er indoors over what to tape over the weekend, as we were busy both evenings.

Turns out I didn't, and will not, watch anything from Saturday and have only recorded the Windsor thing and Bremner, Bird and Fortune from Sunday.

BARB ratings take account of the number of people watching each television, so five people in one room watching one set counts as five viewers, not one television. Households with BARB boxes automatically record which channel is being viewed by all sets in the houseold. The people in the house simply have to note how many people are watching at any given time. It also takes account of timeshifting (VCR and, I presume, Sky+ recording) and I also think it takes commercial property viewing into consideration, such as pubs showing football matches.

Erm, how about none of the above?

Because they are the only good things both networks can show on a Saturday night.

I miss Gladiators

My ideal Saturday night was 10 years ago when we started the evening with...

New Adventures of Superman
Jim Davidson's Generation Game
Noel's House Party
The National Lottery Live (Mystic Meg!)
Casualty (back in the days with Clive Mantle and Jane Gurnett)
