Dick and Dom slam BBC over quiz

Children's TV duo Dick and Dom have criticised the BBC over their ill-fated revival of quiz show Ask the Family.
The pair said the show, which was axed in June after a critical panning and low ratings, was "totally the wrong vehicle for us and really badly done".

The duo, whose BBC One show Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow will end in April, called the quiz "absolutely shoddy".

A BBC spokeswoman said: "It wasn't a good programme and whose fault that was is neither here nor there."

She added: "We admitted at the time that the show didn't work and we took it off air.

"We've long planned to refresh Saturday mornings in April, anyway. Dick and Dom have been great."

Critical reviews

The duo told London radio station LBC that Ask the Family had been "a good experience".

"It was the biggest load of tat that we've ever, ever done," they said.

"We had the wrong production team at the BBC. It shouldn't have been called Ask The Family.

"It was just an awful programme."

One critic described the revival of Ask the Family as TV "made by morons for morons".

The programme was dropped at the end of its five-week run.

Ratings slipped from one million for the launch programme, to just 700,000 - only one in 25 of the available audience - towards the end.

The original series, presented by Robert Robinson, ran from 1967 to 1982.

Is it just me, or is it suicide for these two to slate the BBC in the way they have?

Notwithstanding the dreadfulness of the show, why would they choose to bite the hands that feeds like this?

I'm pretty confidnt that they won't easily find work after their Saturday show ends. If I were them I'd be hedging my bets.

Sharp blade, check. Woodern hinges, check. Rope to lift, check. French revolutionary, working on that!

Just give the boy's a razor blade and let them do what they evidently do so brilliantly. F*ck it up - in more ways than one.

I'm aware there had been growing unease between the corporation and the "couple" but this lampooning shows the statte of affairs and a messy one at that.

Or well, it could be worse, they could be Childrens' TV Presenters, one of whom likes dirty texts, wait a minute...

They just seem to be airing their opinion. The programme was sh*t. Everyone knows it. This is a non-story.

Remember though that Ask The Family wasn't made by the Childrens department, and the head of Childrens resigned a few days ago so thee's no bridges burnt in that area.

Personally I don't see that there would be a problem with what they said - the programme didn't work, and the BBC know that. If it did work it would have been recommissioned. what they said is just stating the obvious

In my opinion, the only vehicle for Dick n' Dom is one where the doors are locked, going over a cliff, they are almost as bad as Ant n' Dec...

Dick and Dom have always been idiots, but for once I find myself agreeing with them. Why shouldn't they be allowed an opinion? If their comments were offensive or distateful fair enough, but this was constructive criticism.

Surely it is censorship to deny performers their viewpoint, even if the boss doesn't like what they have to say?

I may be wrong - but wasn't Ask The Family a commission by Daytime? Strangely that was where Alison Sharman was before she moved to CBBC 5 months ago. She is now leaving there for ITV - and I believe the cheers can still be heard in the East Tower...

Could be Dick N Dom didn't get on with her too well - they were promoted from CBBC to BBC One by the previous head of CBBC, and I suspect Ms Sharman was behind the move for the Bungalow to be "rested"?

I know there isn't much love lost between many working at CBBC and their soon-to-depart head...

Does seem a little reckless for DnD to bite the hand though.
