JK & Joel and Fearne and Reggie on Early Breakfast MyTunes special was probably recorded all week, weekends have been pretty much live

What is unbelieveable is that the MyTunes specials and Nihal on Breakfast continues all next week

Didn't know they were "specials", they're on too early for me to listen!

Annie Mac is in for Jo Whiley all next week too. Sara Cox is in for Edith Bowman.

Zane Lowe is off too for at least three weeks.

Yeah but Zane's got family in New Zealand who haven't seen his new baby yet, and he was born months and months ago.

I didn't say it was a bad thing.

A caller just asked Scott Mills if he was live on Friday and he said he was.
Bollocks was he.

Well Sara Cox had been suggesting yesterday that she was live today, almost certain she isn't. No webcam picture today, the R1 homepage isn't showing the current song and Newsbeat well there was a noticeable gap upto 20 secs between the end of the 1.30 Newsbeat and the next bit.

If silence is bad, how about the opposite. Listen 2h30 in to Scott Mills' One Night with Laura show, at the end of the news all the jingles crash into each other!

How do they manage the recorded shows. I would have thought they'd just record the show in 4 parts and slot them in around the live news

But it seems that they record it in 1 part with predetermined timings for the news, and if they don't fill it, it leaves gaps of silence between the news ending and the show continuing

Which seems very sloppy if thats how it was left - usually someone checks the log on the server before broadcast so that all timings are correct for each clock hour.

When our stations in the Midlands took the Chris Tarrant Christmas Day Special - this arrived in 3 parts per hour - once in the schedule broadcast log it was easy to see if the hour underun once news and ad breaks were added - you simply then add extra items - show promotions, trailers or an extra song to make up the time so news bulletins were hit bang on.

Here's some clips if you don't want to use listen again. The 1st time, he crashes the jingles fairly spectacularly as he is drowned out by the sweeper overlaid on top of the news out jingle. The 2nd time it's not as bad, but still she crashes the sweeper.

I expect the odd mistake, perhaps, but I think this edition of the Scott Mills show was very slap-dash and the audio quality of the Laura clips was dire throughout - it was as if they had nicked them off the podcast or something as you could tell the sound was from a low bitrate source, and it was painful to listen to with all the 'bubbling'.

This was on FM, god knows what it would have sounded like on DAB with the transcoding and low bit-rates. Awful, truly awful. Surely they should have un-compressed masters of the original segments?

They left all of the bits in that were supposed to have been edited out - at one point there's a bit where Mills cocks up after a song and says 'take 2' or somesuch and they replay the song and he does the bit again.

The levels were all over the place too esp. towards the end. I'm surprised something as dire as this was even allowed to be broadcast, I'd expect something like this from an RSL or internet radio station, but not BBC R1.

I can bet some people will be in hot water tomorrow over this. Laughing

Well not tomorrow, but next Monday as Radio 1 are still on holiday till then! Rolling Eyes

There's been negative comments about Radio 1's Xmas output on other websites so it's obviously been noticed far and wide

I think the problem is that too many of their DJs are big personalites/TV stars, hence none of them want to work at all across the festive season

There needs to be a few DJs who have worked their way up from local radio and once reaching Radio 1 would probably not mind working 24 hours on Christmas Day

Well Scott worked live on Christmas Day. He used to work on a local station near me, and moved around a bit, until he got to Radio 1.

He also is the default cover for a lot of the other DJs, it seems fair that he gets a week or two off to me.
