Right, a little idea I had which I thought you might like to have a go at...

Supposing you were in charge of the launch of a new news channel and you had to decide the presenting slots (ie. times), the menu for each half hour/hour (ie. where sport goes, business, etc), what type of programmes you have and whether the programmes should be single headed, double headed or a combination.

It's all down to you... what do you think?

(More about why I had this idea in this post)

I think I would have 2 separate looks.

For hour-long news programmes, I'd have a sting followed by the headlines at the top of the hour followed by a full 20 minutes of news including a weather summary at about 19 past. Then there would the headlines again, followed by a 5-minute sports and 5-minute business update. Then some more feature-y type news. Headlines again at 40 past, then an in-depth look at the top 2 or 3 stories from the top of the hour.
At 55 past, a BBC World style 'reminder of the top story', followed by an end sting and then a full weather bulletin.

For the half-hour programmes followed by features, I would go sting, headlines, 15 mins of top stories, headlines, 5-mins sport, features, reminder of the top stories @ 27, then the weather summary. Programme would begin at 30.

The programmes would be half an hour long and would be News-24 style, ie one dedicated to business, one for sport, one for technology, one for features, one for an indepth interview, etc.

Right, here goes...

I'd have a Breakfast show from 6-9.30, followed by some kind of interactive phone-in show. Then at 10 and 11, I'd half half hour news bulletins, with some sort of lifestyle feature show at 10.30, and a business programme at 11.30 (like sky news 'Money').
From 12-1.30, I'd have some rolling news, followed by half an hour of one of the US breakfast shows (I used to enjoy watching CBS this morning on Sky!).
From 2-5 I'd have a 3-hour rolling news show, with lots of live reports, interactive elements (e-mails etc), as well as some big-name interviews (roughly similar to the Simon Mayo show on 5 live).
At 5, I'd have something that's a cross between Live at 5 and CNN's News Site - a fast-paced and in-depth (if that's possible!) wrap of the day's news.
For the evening schedule, I'd do something a bit different. I'd have half-hour 'Evening News' programmes every hour between 6 and 10, with specialised feature programmes on the half hour (sport, business, showbiz, debate).
Then, from 10-12, I'd have a late-night wrap-up of the day's news, with paper reviews, political analysis etc.
Overnight, well nobody really watches it, so who cares?! But I'd have news on the hour, and probably re-runs of features on the half-hour. Or maybe some stuff from the US, if it's not already shown elsewhere.

The set would be big and open-plan, like MSNBC's - so all the shows would come from different areas and have their own identity.

All the 30min bulletins would have one presenter, but anything longer would be double-headed. The evening news bulletins would have a big-name presenter. Obviously I'd poach Katie Derham from ITV for this... Wink
