I think CV would be a logical and brilliant replacement...but who'd do the numbers game?!?! Wink

John McCririck! Twisted Evil

The reason I'm so against Carol Vorderman hosting it is it would be wrong for someone to step into her shoes while she is still on board - the comparison wouldn't be fair on either of them.

haha! McCririck - genious! I normally hate the program, but tomorrow's episode of celebrity wife swap with him in looks hilarious!

can understand your views on Carol Vorderman...if the new numbers person couldn't get it, there'd be all kinds of comments like 'bet Carol would have got it'...and probably continual asking as to whether she did it in a faster time or not.

Im sure I remember in the early days of countdown they had a different woman doing the letters, and Carol just did the numbers part. Surely she could do the hosting and the numbers and just get someone else in to do the letters?

Yes that might just work. The letters rounds require little more than a bimbo who can spell, and I always did think that this part of Carol's job was a bit demeaning for someone with delusions of genius as Carol has.

Carol could host the show, and get some bubble-head to do the numbers and letters rounds, with Carol simply reading out her answers at the end of each numbers round and the girl writing it out.

The only problem I see with this is, does Carol have enough of a character to pull it off?

I had to laugh at Carol today. Well done to her for her walk in the Great North Run yesterday for Richard Whitely, but she it was just hilarious when they were discussing it. "Yes it was very hard" - even though I've not done it yet because it still mid September. Smile

Hmm, take a look at what ITV DVD is releasing for Christmas....

Countdown Interactive DVD ,but with Carol and Des on the cover, I can see it being reduced quickly....

On a slightly different note, I think they've stopped selling the board games that still had Richard and Carol on the front, which they were selling last year.

There is only one person to take over, the same person who should have taken over in the first place - Gyles Brandreth. He was born for countdown - an intellectual, corny and an interesting sense of humour. Almost as if Richard had never left.

An intellectual -- is that what you call it.

GB as host of Countdown would only attract the old, female, Tory vot.... ah, I see what you mean. Just the kind of blue-rinse WI lot that watch it now!

Inspired choice!!

I think the novelty of having Giles presenting would wear off very quickly-- and see him getting irritatingly smarmy.

Didn't he turn it down out of respect for RW though? He might feel differently now there's been another presenter doing it?

Might be one worth getting and keeping. In a couple of decades time the couple of series Des Lynam hosted may well be forgotten - so take your Countdown Interactive DVD (Des Lynam edition) down to the Antiques Roadshow (probably hosted by Ian Wright - but don't let that put you off!) and you could be quids in!

And in the very early days, she didn't even put the cards up - her role was basically a numbers equivalent of the lexicographer, only there to check the answers and provide better ones. And even that was only on the days when Linda Barrett wasn't doing it instead...

does anyone know when he going to be stepping down?

Initially they had different people too putting the numbers up to the letters, so three people did Carol's role.

I remember having a countdown board game when I was younger!

Well if Carol was to host the show, she could still provide the "better" answers to the numbers part!

The thing is though Carol isn't a suitable host for the show - her links introducing the guests show that.

They appear far more forced than when Des introduces the contestants!

Anyhow, as we're all pretty clueless about who the next host will be, I wonder if they'll take the opportunity to change the set and start afresh.

It'll be easier to do that now than it was when Des took over - and it's pretty much due for some kind of makeover, even if it's just changing the pink colour scheme.
