I think CV would be a logical and brilliant replacement...but who'd do the numbers game?!?!
John McCririck!
The reason I'm so against Carol Vorderman hosting it is it would be wrong for someone to step into her shoes while she is still on board - the comparison wouldn't be fair on either of them.

haha! McCririck - genious! I normally hate the program, but tomorrow's episode of celebrity wife swap with him in looks hilarious!
can understand your views on Carol Vorderman...if the new numbers person couldn't get it, there'd be all kinds of comments like 'bet Carol would have got it'...and probably continual asking as to whether she did it in a faster time or not.
Carol could do the numbers, letters and host. They'd just have to rejig the set a bit.
Guest hosts wouldn't work, it's ok on Have I got News for You because that's just a comedy show, on Countdown real people are playing seriously and trying to win, so a host trying to get all the limelight wouldn't work

Getting Carol to do everything, I don't think that will work.

Exactly. Carol is so well established where she is. Mind you, she has had more of a dominant role since Des took over, and it has started to become excrutiating.
Let Des do his job, and you get on with totting up sums and sticking letters on the board Carol! I don't mind a bit of banter (as she had with RW), but she is trying to take over!
You need a male presenter to be a foil I think. Alan Coren or Stephen Fry perhaps? They have the intellect and quirkiness.
Paul Merton's quick/ surreal wit is better suited to 'chattier' shows like
Room 101
or
HIGNFY
. Not that much dialogue for him to get his teeth into on C'down.
Bob Holness or Magnus Magnusson... or are they retired/semi-retired now? Perhaps Michael Aspel? I think Parky was asked to do it last time round wasn't he?
There is always rumour that Ken Bruce is to be dropped from Radio 2, and he has appeared on Dictionary Corner on occasion.
I like the suggestion of Duncan Wood... RW was only a presenter for Calendar when he started on C'down after all. His stint on GMTV made him nationally 'known'. He certainly has the personality, and seems like a clever chap.
There is only one person to take over, the same person who should have taken over in the first place - Gyles Brandreth. He was born for countdown - an intellectual, corny and an interesting sense of humour. Almost as if Richard had never left.

Im sure I remember in the early days of countdown they had a different woman doing the letters, and Carol just did the numbers part. Surely she could do the hosting and the numbers and just get someone else in to do the letters?

An intellectual -- is that what you call it.
GB as host of Countdown would only attract the old, female, Tory vot.... ah, I see what you mean.
Just
the kind of blue-rinse WI lot that watch it now!
