Just to throw his name into the ring - William G Stewart!

Yes he has presented before, he would be a worthy replacement IMHO! Smile

Well he stoped doing 15 to 1 because he'd reached an age where he wanted to enjoy his retirement, so I don't think that's very likely. He must be 71 now.

So nothing to do with C4 axing it then!

To be fair I think 15 to 1 finished because Stewart wanted to retire, not because C4 were fed up with it. It had been going for 16 years, but was still very popular. I think it could be brought back in the future with another presenter, because it was a brilliant game show IMO.

I'd chuck in Fred Dinenage. Fred's not afraid to travel from his home in Hampshire . Used to host Anglia's Gambit, and HOW2 from Glasgow in the days when Scottish TV produced the show. Anything's got to be better than that miserable set of broom cupboards in Whitely.

Now why didn't I think of that. Fred Dinenage would be perfect!

Les? To whom exactly are you referring ... Les Dennis? ... Les Battersby? ... Les Miserables . . . ?

It was never any surprise that Des would not do years and years though, was it? I've always admired Des as a presenter but considering the type and number of shows he previously did in say, an average week, 5 eps a day 5 days a week must be a big shock to the system. Richard always did Mon-Fri in the days of Calendar so was no doubt well up for the schedule anyway.

Short of going down the HIGNFY route of guest presenters, and ruling out Carol, I think they need a largely unknown presenter with character and personality who can deal with recording that number of programmes. A big task.

It should have finished when Richard Whiteley passed away.

You hit the nail on the head, the show doesn't do very well in the ratings now anyway. Time to put it out of its misery.

The show has performed better in the ratings since Des took over than in the last couple of years of Richard.

The ratings for the show now are back to where they were when Whiteley was hosting and hovering around 1.2 million.

Yes I agree, 15-1 was a brilliant quiz show. I always enjoyed it much more than Countdown.

Robin Houston ?

One of the best continuity announcers, and before that radio newsreader, the UK has had.

I think Greggles would be great as the new Countdown host - inject a bit of fun to the format. Then again, I agree with the statement about him being more suited to something a bit more 'interactive' like Family Fortunes etc.

The show used to attract a lot of student viewing back in the day, so with a livlier presenter than old Des, surely it's possible to get that audience back?

It could go either way, put someone new, fresh and relatively unseen on there like Greggles, and ratings could go up again...or they could just continue to decline...it's a bit of a gamble.

I think Countdown has had its day to a degree, but IMHO I think that view is largely due to Des Lynam having hosted it for the past 18 months or however long it is. I'm sure he's a lovely bloke, but he doesn't have the BEST personality for TV!

I think CV would be a logical and brilliant replacement...but who'd do the numbers game?!?! Wink
