How about Greggles from Quizmania fame?

Didn't he used to be the warm up man for Countdown, surely he must have known Carol as he seemed to know Richard Whitley well.

Greg Scott did come to mind too, I must admit, although I think he'd be better suited to something like Family Fortunes or Catchphrase. Why ITV haven't used him for such a show is beyond me.

Gyles said he didn't want to do "Countdown" without Richard 18 months ago. Unless he's changed his mind, I can't see him doing it. There are lots of people that p[robably could - Eamonn Holmes is far more suited to this kind of show than Sky News, or there's Richard Digeance or Geoffrey Durham if they want a "Countdown" regular.

There are a few names I'd like to see considered, they are:

Paul Coia- He did the continuity announcement into the first ever "Countdown" so there's a heritage link there. He was also very good on the BBC quiz "Catchword". I said it last year, and I'll say it again, he'd be my first choice for the job.

Elton Welsby- Another former sports broadcaster, who did a good job on "Busman's Holiday".

Terry Wogan- He'd be a competent choice, but I doubt his schedule would allow it.

Bill Buckley- Another who I think would prove very competent.

Geoff Druett- A familiar face at YTV who could certainly hold his own on Countdown.

I'd chuck in Fred Dinenage. Fred's not afraid to travel from his home in Hampshire . Used to host Anglia's Gambit, and HOW2 from Glasgow in the days when Scottish TV produced the show. Anything's got to be better than that miserable set of broom cupboards in Whitely.

Countdown wouldn't work for Greggles. Sadly I think I can definately see Gyles Brandreth taking over. Not everyone's cup of tea but he fits the bill. Well either him or The Goodies, Graeme Garden who hosted the ill-fated Beat The Nation.

Mind you when Des goes... I really think they should put Countdown to bed.

It should have finished when Richard Whiteley passed away.

Yes he has presented before, he would be a worthy replacement IMHO! Smile

How2 has never been made in Glasgow - it has always been made in Maidstone first for TVS and then for STV (can't remember the production company, though!!)

Well he stoped doing 15 to 1 because he'd reached an age where he wanted to enjoy his retirement, so I don't think that's very likely. He must be 71 now.

OFF topic: but HOW 2 has been made in Glasgow,

How do you explain when there did an outside How and in the background it was the Glasgow skyline?

Well from Gareth Jones' website, The first series was made in Maidstone, the second in Southampton then back to Maidstone. It moved to Scotland for series 4 onwards. Also Fred would mention that he had been away in Scotland when he came back to Meridian Tonight without a tan.

The only show to have remained in Maidstone constantly was/is Art Attack.
