I say give the job to Carol, and bring in Wincey Willis to do the numbers and letters!

I think you're right, instead of bringing in another presenter just get Carol to host the show instead. She's earned a promotion if you ask me.

Richard got the job in the first place because he was Leeds based (and it started as a regional show). Do they have anyone at Leeds who could take it on, someone like Duncan Wood who is known nationally through GMTV.

On the other hand this could be a further excuse to move it to London, they could say no one wanted to commute to Leeds.

If they move it to London, what are they going to produce in Leeds?, I'm sure that's the only studio in use now at Leeds!

Yorkshire TV is one of the few ITV companies to still make quite a few programmes for the ITV Network. Its only Granada (Manchester), Yorkshire and London now.

So it's Christmas he's going actually - so the 18 months is a bit of an exageration!

A definate no to Carol taking over - it still bugs me she introduces the dictionary corner guest. It wouldn't surprise me actually if she went with him!

Absolutely no idea really who could take over - there is a risk they'll now go for second best to sort out the location issue.

My bet is going to be ITN's Nicholas Owen - his role at ITN is seemingly decreasing and he's been in dictionary corner a few times, but isn't what I'd call one of the Countdown regulars - so would be a good compromise.

Why cant Carol take over? She had been there for over 20 years so deserves it.

Nick Owen could take over but could he do it if he also presents the ITV Lunchtime News.

Unfotunately, I'm convinced that he has indeed quit, which is another blow for Countdown.

I also hope Carol doesn't get the main role. It's not about "deserving" it's about keeping the show consistent.

My choice to replace him would be Paul Merton, one of the contenders for the job last year.

It's pretty pathetic that he couldn't last for a year before deciding to quit IMO.

There are a few names I'd like to see considered, they are:

Paul Coia- He did the continuity announcement into the first ever "Countdown" so there's a heritage link there. He was also very good on the BBC quiz "Catchword". I said it last year, and I'll say it again, he'd be my first choice for the job.

Elton Welsby- Another former sports broadcaster, who did a good job on "Busman's Holiday".

Terry Wogan- He'd be a competent choice, but I doubt his schedule would allow it.

Bill Buckley- Another who I think would prove very competent.

Geoff Druett- A familiar face at YTV who could certainly hold his own on Countdown.

Oh no. He did a quiz show for ITV last year called "Watching The Detectives" and he was a truly awful quizmaster.

don't they have hotels, guest houses travel lodges in Leeds?

Um... that's where Carol and Des stop when they *are* up filming, or at least that's what they were telling the audience when I was at the filming a few weeks back. I did note when there is that Lynam still seemed a little detached from the whole thing for all he did try, so maybe he still felt a bit of an outsider on Richard's show. Kudos to the Mirror for at least tacking on a bit about Carol's Walking for Richard fundraiser tomorrow mind.

Last time I remembered, Countdown isn't a quiz. He doesn't really have to do much.

No, but it does involve talking to contestants, something Nicholas Owen is very poor at. This is what I wrote about his turn on "Watching the Detectives":

Jenny, last year, posted:
His manner is that of a rather staid and condescending BBC children's presenter of the 1950s, and he has no rapport with the contestants - indeed, were host and contestants not occasionally shown in the same shot, you'd think he was recording his bits separately.

And while admittedly Des did take a while to settle in, I still don't think Nicholas Owen has the capacity to work well with members of the public.
