I presume he could not show them as they were the winning balls

They weren't the winning balls before they were drawn though were they? Rolling Eyes

Maybe the left hand side of the screen was recording and the correct balls where place as it was happening.

I'm sure I read that the lottery drawings have been pre-recorded since Fathers 4 Justice raided the studio, so he could have been present during tonight's recording.

That's not true and he wouldn't have needed to be present would he.

Props and/or mind games...

That is all.

Also, anyone remember the show he did where he made somebody win the lottery.."this is the dog you're looking for" etc.. it's the same concept.

There is no camera trickery or "magic" or illusion involved and it will all be revealed on friday.

No, they're live... however they aren't held in a studio with the public present. It's done in a studio at Arqiva in Cheshunt I believe

I suggest the left hand side of the screen was a frozen image and while the numbers were being drawn, the correct numbered balls were being put into place. There was ample time when he was messing around writing the numbers down for a switch to take place

One thing I did notice was that during the draw itself he was dead still, he didn't move a muscle. However the camera was constantly shaking.

I wonder whether the camera shake was artificial and there was some fancy vision mixing to freeze the balls and Derren on screen while the real ones were being changed

That's an interesting theory. Derren Brown wouldn't need to be still though. They could have used a locked off camera with only the left part of the picture being fake and the bit with Derren Brown and the TV really being live. I have watched it back a couple of times now and I kept having to tell myself to look at the balls in the studio rather than the TV. If someone had changed the balls just after the draw, there would have been a jump in the picture where they wouldn't put the balls back in the exact same way and as far as I could see, there wasn't a jump.

Yes I know but they turned out to be the winning balls, if you get me. He knew they were the balls tonight, so legally could not show them.

No, he just said that as the excuse for not showing them before, because they obviously weren't on the balls. Rolling Eyes

Ah I was just trying to think of all corners, quit with the eye rolling please. It's a guessing game I'm just trying to play.

I doubt it. He is not a "magician".. in the sense of Paul Daniels and the disappearing elephant etc.

I believe the whole thing was 100% live like he said.

He works behind the illusions and magic. He plays tricks with the mind that's all. I have no idea (like most others) how he did it but if you have studied Derren Brown's previous work correctly, you'll sense the logic behind it.

Yep, the camera shake was the key to the making the whole illusion work in the viewer's mind. The two halves of the screen were 'knitted together' (with a bit of gaussian blur) - the knit was just down the left hand side of the monitor (while someone obviously placed the correct balls in the holder), and it faded back into the full screen just before Brown walked over to it.

The camera shake was added post-production (I know it was live but you know what I mean) and served a dual purpose - it made it appear real, whilst also ironing out any tiny flaws in the fade in/out.
