But I can see the whole Lottery thing being total misdirection. There have been times in his stage shows where it appears he gets things completely wrong, only for it to turn out to be planned and a set up to a greater trick. So maybe it'll appear he gets the numbers all wrong, only for it to be a set-up for something else.
Well the series is called the Events of Misdirection after all.
Well it's one way of getting you to watch the event by claiming he'll predict the lottery numbers live.
This all reminds me too much of the loathsome David Blaine.
Don't mean to be an old humbug but its just trickery for heavens sake. Nothing hypnotic, paranormal or magical about any of it. It may be clever and/or complex, but its still just a trick.
Magicians on TV are old hat these days
unless
you turn it into some kind of "event". The lead up to the actual conjuring trick is now bigger than the trick itself - so the audience has days to ponder the mystery before they've seen anything.
I'm sure it would be much less notable if he performed the same trick without the fanfare weeks in advance.
One big difference between tw@tdangler-in-chief David Blaine and Derren Brown. David Blaine believes in himself as being a spectacle, which people from far and wide will want to come to see, because he is him (hence the surprise at having stuff thrown at him in London). There's nothing impossible about starving yourself for four weeks, or standing on a pole for a day. Human endurance is pretty boring to watch.
Derren Brown on the other hand, takes things which we believe are impossible, and explores and reveals how they are done. His work is more psychology than magic, and the way he can manipulate people without them being aware of it is quite gripping without all the fanfare of the "big event" surrounding it. The way he openly goes "I'm going to use some simple magic tricks, misdirection and some psychology to convince you I can do something you know is impossible. See if you can spot how I'm doing it? If you don't, I'll tell you how when I've finished.", is quite refreshing, and different to almost every other TV "magician" ever.

Its not that different from "Magic's Biggest Secrets - Revealed", which is enjoying another rerun on ITV3. At least their magician doesn't pretend there's psychology at work. There isn't!
Misdirection, cheating camera angles and tricked-out props.

That's the size of it.
No, it's mostly psychology. Everything he does is mental, linguistic or logical tricks rather than physical props.
He explains and goes into great detail about where most of his tricks and skills have come from and how they were developed. Also he is a great debunker, revealing how the less scrupulous such as psychics and mediums operate
There's no comparison with 'Magics Biggest Secrets Revealed' - they are traditional physical tricks
I'll watch this, but I'd be willing to bet we won't know what numbers he's picked until after the draw and by Friday we'll be rather disappointed by the whole thing.
On a side note, I found quite an interesting six-part interview with Derren Brown on Youtube (conducted by Richard Dawkins), where Derren reveals how many of his mind-tricks work. First part here...
Just to confirm as Asa himself said earlier, this will be on C4, E4, Film4, More4 and 4 Music tomorrow night (confirmed on EPG).
Any finally a use for picture in picture too.
Very odd that this is on all channels (not More4 though according to channel4.com.) It wasn't in the Sky EPG for all channels when Asa first mentioned it, I checked. I guess it acts like a ten minute promo for the Friday show and the rest of the series.
Not too odd really - it's the sort of thing C4 like to do, and it's being heavily promoted tonight as being on "all fours". As you say though it does act as a promo for the series.
I agree with the point though this is probably just a cover for something bigger.
