Denis Norden to retire his clipboard

Veteran presenter Denis Norden has announced his retirement after thirty years working with ITV.

The 84-year-old is best known for his TV outtakes series It'll be Alright on the Night and oddball clips series Denis Norden's Laughter File and has also worked on shows including The Glums (1978), Pick Of The Pilots (1990) and Denis Norden’s Trailer Cinema (1992).

Before his retirement, Norden will record one final entertainment special that will act as a "farewell tour" to his numerous shows from over the years. Called All the Best From Denis Norden, the special will be filmed next month for transmission later this year.

“Denis Norden is the longest-serving entertainment star on ITV, and it’s been our privilege to work with him since the first edition of It’ll Be Alright On the Night back in 1977," said Mark Wells, controller of entertainment for ITV Productions.

"He’s remained involved with every aspect of his shows – writing, presenting, and selecting the material, and his knowledge of comedy is unrivalled in British broadcasting. Like the viewers, we shall miss him but wish him the very best for his retirement.”

I wonder if this will be the end of It'll be Alright on the Night? Shame because I do love that show whenever ITV feel like showing it but not sure if it's because of Denis himself or for the out-takes.

How weird, I just saw the very first Laughter File as it happened to be at the end of a video I was watching, and I thought "wonder how long he'll go on for".

It's just finished and I logged on here to see this! Shocked

Sorry to hear Denis is going - we could see it coming but it will still be a huge loss to ITV. Alright On The Night shines above rival out-take shows, largely due to Denis' input.

I hope this doesn't mean the end of Alright On The Night - but a new host would have to be of similar calibre to Denis. Any suggestions?

Gutted.

Such a shame, as they are very good programmes, and he was a very good presenter. Ah well, we've still got wednesday late night repeats of Laugher File on ITV1.

I can now imagine a new outtake programme for the channel. Like what Outtake TV did for Aunties Bloomers. Although the worst is possible - a new presenter Shocked

Thank god he's going!
I can't believe he's 84, he should have been retired at 65 to let someone younger present the mindless drivel.

why?????

65 may be a retiring age, but it is up to the individual if they want to carry on, and up to the company to see if their insurance cover it - before anyone says that point! But this country lack general entertainers and witty entertainers (which I class Denis Norden).

I know for certain there is no-one around that equals his sharp dry witty comments. He will be missed from our screens - but may he have a continuous healthy life in retirement.

Very, very few like him indeed. Good wishes for your retirement, Denis.

Never fear, ITV plc will come to the rescue; I'll give it 6 months before it's rehashed into a half hour daily tea time format presented by some cheap unheard of nobody with no studio audience but lots of canned laughter.

I expect it will be something like that. They'll just introduce a new outtake format.

Outtake TV is rubbish compared with Aunties Bloomesrs. Especially those 'Weakest Link special's that seem to be written in to Anne Robinson's contract. Terry Wogan was better.

Also, strange to think of it now, but Paul O'Grady presented Outtake TV for a bit didn't he.

Steve Penk?

I sincerely hope not. "The way they were" was tedious beyond compare.

Steve Penk presented TV Nightmares 1, 2, 3...

How about Angus Deighton. He doesn't have much to do thesedays and seems to be fairly regular on ITV
