But having said that without Big Brother, Channel 4 would have even more imports and repeats

Fine. Channel 4's imports are better then the crap they make themselves anyway. Imports are about the only things I watch these day's. Neither were on Ch4 but the 2 best shows on TV this year have been Mad Men and the final series of The Wire. Sadly though both were watched by few because people would rather watch formulaic crap like The Bill & Coronation Street. As the above poster said, while people continue to watch trash in droves over 'The Wire' they'll continue to make it. Good TV is out there (if you look hard enough) - people just don't watch it.

Long running series may be cheaper to make, but the BBC could maybe make one not in a hospital...

Yep - how about one based in a Police Station?

To be fair detective / police long runners ( as in length of series ) have been more ITV's domain.

City Central / Merseybeat / Waterfront Beat etc hardly lasted on the BBC

Indeed...

Maybe a long running drama with a public-house at the centre would be better than a police station? Or how about one based around a hotel? Or what about a farm? Or we could possibly look at the sailing boat industry on the south coast? Or how about ex-pats in Spain? What about the US oil industry?

Oh I'm just brimming with ideas tonight...
