With the death of the former Prime Minister now imminent, how do you think television will cover the events? Will programmes be interrupted? And what sort of coverage will they give to the State Funeral? Will it be David Dimbleby or Huw Edwards presenting for the BBC?
This thread is for discussion of the upcoming news story.
With the death of the former Prime Minister now imminent
If you are basing this on the rumour that started on Twitter yesterday, you may be disappointed. Someone faked a Reuters article saying she was close to death, and then as expected the rumour took on a life of its own. The editor of the Radio 4 news programme The World at One said on Twitter that the BBC's understanding is that the rumour is wrong.
My goodness, my heart leapt into my mouth when I read the thread title! I thought Mrs Thatcher had actually died
I don't think anyone can really give a proper answer to this topic. Yes, she might pass away tomorrow, or could live for several more years; nobody knows. Again, if and when the time comes, Dimbleby may well have retired and, although it's unlikely, who's to say Huw Edwards hasn't move on from the BBC? The only thing I can safely say with any certainty is that programmes most likely will be interrupted and I expect some form of rolling coverage and/or news specials. If they did that for Bin Laden, then Mrs Thatcher deserves it. I expect coverage of her funeral to be akin to that of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997 or the Queen Mother in 2002. No matter what people's opinions of Mrs Thatcher are, she is a former prime minister and deserves proper coverage in the event of her death.
Oh, "immenent" - we'll put the celebrations on hold then. Unfortunately though with her ******* child now in Government it'll be seen as a period of national mourning when in reality for many she did more damage to Britain in the 20th century than Hilter could ever have dreamed of.
I started the thread as there was an article in the Daily Mail today about her frailty now, and her lack of public appearances. So I'm sure media organisations will/have been talking about their coverage. Twitter is talking about it a lot too.
I'm not a fan of Thatcher and I don't think she should be getting a state funeral but apparently that's what she's getting. The first politician to get one since Churchill. Dimbleby should certainly get the gig. Gig's probably not the right word but there you go.
Hopefully ITV will team up Philip & Julie again and turn it into another light hearted celebration.
BBC News will air a special programme at 8/8.30pm depending on whether Eastenders is on or not. ITV will drop the 6pm regional news and air an extended evening news with News at Ten extended too, with a Tonight special that week. Lorraine Kelly will discuss Maggie's fashion over the years and how to get the look.
The funeral will get all day coverage. Basically I think it will be blanket coverage similar to The Royal Wedding without eating into the schedule apart from the actual funeral.

Except Thatcher's funeral plans are nothing to do with the current government.
It was Gordon Brown who decided she deserved a state funeral back in 2008.

If Labour feel Maggie deserves a state funeral then what do you think her successors are going to think?
