£12,500 (at the third offer), think they had £50,000 in the box.

First time in a while someones got at the third offer.

Really, really, really irritates me how people say they're there to "play the game" - and seem to think that means playing till the end whatever and opening the box.

NO!!!

The "game" is trying to make the right deal at the right time and go away with the most amount of money possible - and when player after player after player carries on till the end regardless, it gets rather boring.

Sadly missed the show but what did the contestant actually win?

He dealt very early in the game, accepting £12,500. Later offers were £22,000 and £26,000. He actually had £15,000 in his box (after the re-shuffle), but nobody knows what was in there before that, and it doesn't really matter since he didn't go all the way to the end without dealing.

EDIT:
I didn't realise Brekkie had already replied. I do agree with him though, in that it's not the point to necessarily push until the end and just get what's in your own box. The skill is in knowning when, on balance, you have just about the best offer you're going to get without risking too much.

It's not got alot to do with the box you have for most of the game, it's the random order the others are opened, and the offers they create (assuming the boxes have something in them - lol!).

I think the reason the offer was made was to ensure that the contestant was completely satisfied with the integrity of the game. The fact that the amount couldn't simply have been revealed indicated that the independent auditor probably wasn't comfortable with continuing, for whatever reason it would have been. Also, the fact that Noel was given the label practically removed the possibility of simply revealing the amount, because it would have meant that someone other than the adjudicator would have known where the money was (or wasn't, in the event).

Overall, I think the incident was handled very well and very professionally.

Not necessarily. Who's saying that the independent adjudicator wasn't in the back and gave Noel the card?

It was handled well and professionally but I think really they should have just revealed the amount that should have been in the box and continued. By shuffling them all meant that the remainder of the game changed completely, even to the extent that the contestant didn't even have the same box, and there's no certainty if the boxes were fixed to compensate for the delay. I think they should have announced the amount and continued or restarted the whole game. If they insisted on shuffling then couldn't the contestant have kept the same box so that would elminate the chance of them being purposely given a high/low amount.

If you look carefully, before revealing the card, Noel starts the sentence "it was the quarter of a million pounds", and completes that sentence without looking at the amount on the card. Therefore he must have been shown the card when being given it.

I have no idea why, but one assumes that either the independent adjudicator, the production staff, or the Banker (or any combination of the three) weren't happy with continuing by just revealing the amount. It was important to ensure that all parties involved were completely satisfied with the way the game was to continue: therefore, if any one of them was unhappy with that option, for whatever reason, it would be impossible to continue in that way.
