I have to say I'd prefer " Cash in the Attic " etc to " This Morning ", but then I'm not a typical daytime " mum with kids " as somebody put. I quite like " Escape to the Country " and " Through the Keyhole ". The " dramas " ie Neighbours, Doctors, ITV detective repeats don't appeal to me at all.

Actually looking at my favourites maybe I'm just nosey Laughing

Seriously though, I think both BBC and ITV need to get a metaphorical boot up their daytime backside. At least BBC One has something different where ITV relies on the " cosiness " and familiarity of " This Morning " - although when Fern and Philip are on it can be worth a watch IMO.

You've just reminded me about Through The Keyhole. I was quite excited to see it make a return, especially with a new series. However, I've been quite disappointed with it. Sir David Frost is still on top form with all his catchphrases but I think it is really lacking without Lloyd Grossman. The woman who replaced him was OK, but these latest two, Lisa Snowdon and Stephanie Powers, are cringeworthy. The show also seems to be choosing the houses of obscure "celebrities" - or am I just not up to date with things?

It's quite amusing when the " celebrity " appears and you can tell the panel still don't have a clue who it is.

Although yesterday they did have the woman who plays Uhuru in Star Trek ( obviously not in the studio! )

Maybe ITV suffers in the morning / lunchtime because " This Morning " is one programme with many segments whereas BBC One has defined programmes. And if you like Antiques Roadshow / Location Location Location, in the evening, you may be more likely to watch stuff like Cash in the Attic / To Buy or Not to Buy or the daytime equivalent of evening viewing IMO.

I agree with most here that it surprises me that the BBC still win the daytime ratings battle.

What annoys me too about the BBC morning schedules is they constantly change the schedules - programmes can be at 9.15am one week, 11am the next - and seem to have various lengths too - airing in 30 minute, 45 min and 60 min slots.

The biggest problem though is all the programmes just seem the same.

Although the BBC's afternoon offerings - both on BBC1 and BBC2 - aren't nothing to get excited about, I must say still that ITV1 haven't done enough in the afternoons to justify the axing of CITV IMO. They could definately afford to lose an hour of the Poirot repeats to squeeze it into the schedule.

Also, the news just needs to return to 12.30pm IMO - they must lose more viewers at 1.30pm switching over to Neighbours than they would at 12.30pm - as any they lose at 12.30pm would probably return when the One o'clock News kicks in over on BBC1.

why are people surprised that BBC1 does better in the daytime? It is the period up to 6pm (not just 9.30 to 3pm), and they have Doctors, the Afternoon Play/Murder She Wrote, Neighbours, and a more successful news bulletin.

Ah if only Shortland Street was still on it would help spice up ITV1's schedule!

From 09:25 to 13:30 ITV1 does infact win the ratings but it's when you take into account the whole of the daytime schedule, say between 09:25 and 18:00, it does infact give BBC1 the greater share of ratings.

Its amazing how many people secretly watch Jeremy Kyle even though most people see it as a guilty pleasure.

BBC One's early daytime schedule is full of programmes that I just do not want to watch - they always seem be about antiques, auctions, car boot sales, etc etc - all seem to be exactly the same thing just with a different title but the same presenter - the annoying Lorne Spicer!

Well you are only dealing with 2.00pm to 6.00pm there. You've conveniently left out 9.15am to 2.00pm, which is when BBC1 is full of rubbish (except Neighbours, of course). I think over the whole time period 9.00am to 6.00pm, ITV generally provides more entertaining, live studio programmes with some re-runs in between. Aside from BBC News, BBC1 doesn't have any live studio programmes whatsoever, which is where I feel it is lacking. They need a balance of some pre-recorded lifestyle and drama programmes alongside some live studio based talk/discussion shows.

well...yes, that was my point. People are missing out the period after 1.30pm - where BBC1 gets higher figures until 6pm, ergo raising their average.

ITV is far better than the BBC at daytime TV - On ITV1 they have variety.

ITV1 has - Chat Shows (Jeremy Kyle & Loose Women), Magazine programmes (This Morning), Classic drama's, (Midsummer Murders, Poirot, Rosemary and Thyme etc), News (ITV Lunchtime News, ITV News Summary, Local News), occasional quiz shows (Supermarket Sweep, and the axed Price is Right).

On the other hand the BBC have tacky lifestyle shows. I also think that ITV has benifited from dropping CiTV, my reasons for that a little later.

Personally i feel itv is best up till the end of This Morning, then BBC1 takes over. Neighbours is the best part of it and Doctors is a reasonably good programme. Also although Diagnosis Murder is just repeats it is also good watching. ITV is too celeb orientated in the afternoons. Between about 3.30 and 5.30-6pm ish(excluding Neighbours) though neither channel has particularly watchable programming.

Pre-October 1986, my preferred afternoon viewing would have been BBC1 or BBC2 - a shame there'll never be any repeat of those days Laughing

At least back then, ITV had a great range of afternoon programmes, instructional series like Farmhouse Kitchen were punctuated with Aussie soaps (A Country Practice) and regional news; there were even prime-time re-runs such as Bulman. Ironically, Murder She Wrote was also a staple of ITV afternoons so you can see why BBC1 has been so keen to bring it back!

In 2007, BBC1 wins the afternoon battle hands down. A popular long-running Aussie soap, a sometimes thought-provoking medical drama and cult classics; what have ITV1 got to compete with that? Makeover shows, cookery shows more concerned with enticing you to call premium rate phone lines rather than increase your culinary repertoire and repeats or cheap lifestyle shows.

As for the mornings, trying to decide between BBC1 and ITV1 is like having to choose between McDonalds and Burger King. On ITV1 - the UK's answer to Jerry Springer then a magazine which has dumped almost everything that made it good in favour becoming a two-hour advertisement for whatever reality show is on at the time.

With the exception of City Hospital, which is on far too infrequently, BBC1's alternative is either property shows or auction your old rubbish shows, neither of which float my boat. The Easter schedules are most disappointing, with the usual weekday morning fare on both Good Friday and Easter Monday. Why?

And what about BBC2 and C4. Both ought to be provide a more solid mix of schools programmes but no longer do so, no doubt due to ratings pressures.

Yes, I saw this for the first time since its new series yesterday. Lisa and Stef are certainly cringeworthy. You can tell the director pretty much does all the work when they're describing the houses. You wouldn't catch Lloyd feeling a bed and almost lying on it. Laughing "mmmm yaaarrrs..feel the quality here"

Also is Sir David going deaf? It appears he has trouble hearing the panel sometimes.
