I've been at home all day today which gave me an opportunity to watch some daytime TV. It struck me that, in my opinion, ITV is beating the BBC into the ground. The only programme I've watched on BBC ONE all day was Neighbours. I've watched ITV1 for This Morning, Loose Women and Daily Cooks. All the BBC shows is repeats of Cash in the Attic, To Buy or Not to Buy et al. They are seriously lacking any form of chat/topical discussion programme to rival This Morning and Loose Women. I really do think ITV are the best at daytime TV at the moment.

In terms of late afternoon/early evening, I think Channel 4 wins hands down with Countdown, Deal or No Deal and The Paul O'Grady Show/Richard & Judy.

What do you think?

I totally agree with that, i dont think BBC One appeals to the typical people who are at home all day. Jeremy Kyle / This Morning / Loose Women appeal to a large majority of Mum's with kids, and the people of work.

If i was off work i wouldnt want to watch Cash in the Attic! C4 have a very strong line up from 3.30pm - 7pm, would they ever consider moving any of them permantly to primetime, im thinking POG and Deal.

I'm sorry but BBC One daytime is really awful, I've been off today and the only things I've watched are the One O'Clock News, North West Today and part of Neighbours, otherwise it doesn't appeal to me at all, it's all predictable lifestyle programmes that drive me up the wall. It would be nice to have a Debate (alá Wright Stuff) programme or a sitcom repeat just to add a little variety.

Saying that I don't think ITV1 is much better either, but I agree after 3.30pm Channel 4 wins hands down.

I hate daytime telly full stop and generally try to avoid it where possible.

However, I think that the worst programme I've had the misfortune to see recently was "Gene Detectives" on BBC1, in the 9.15am - 10.00am slot. It was presented in part by Melanie Sykes, and basically involved some poor sap being reunited with some long lost relative.

Whilst a show about family genetics could be very interesting, this was excruciating. Poorly presented, overly drawn out, cheap looking...ugh.

Yep, The Wright Stuff is excellent. If I'm off, I start off with that on Five then switch to ITV1 at 10.30am for This Morning and stay with it then until Neighbours comes on.

I have to agree about ITV1 daytime being much better than BBC One. This Morning is a great show, with lots of different features, interviews and gossip. Loose Women can be really funny at times, whereas BBC One show the same type of programmes all morning. ITV1 could do with trying to make a new programme to fill in the 2-3 slot though.

Although ITV appear to put much more effort in, I believe that the BBC still have the ratings dominance over daytime.

It's still part of the schedule that under performs, especially in the afternoon and the dreaded 5pm slot.

These days the best daytime stuff is on BBC2, which is either old cheesy Look and Read episodes or Prime Minister's Questions !

I have to say I'd prefer " Cash in the Attic " etc to " This Morning ", but then I'm not a typical daytime " mum with kids " as somebody put. I quite like " Escape to the Country " and " Through the Keyhole ". The " dramas " ie Neighbours, Doctors, ITV detective repeats don't appeal to me at all.

Actually looking at my favourites maybe I'm just nosey Laughing

Seriously though, I think both BBC and ITV need to get a metaphorical boot up their daytime backside. At least BBC One has something different where ITV relies on the " cosiness " and familiarity of " This Morning " - although when Fern and Philip are on it can be worth a watch IMO.

That's what always puzzles me. Clearly ITV have better quality, more entertaining shows during the daytime, yet the BBC still wins in the ratings. Part of me thinks it may be down to people switching the TV on to have in the background while they do work/housework and many TVs automatically tune to BBC1.

On a separate note, despite being male and therefore not in the show's target audience, I must say that I look forward to Loose Women when I'm at home. It is so funny and entertaining. Definitely one of the better shows during the daytime.

You've just reminded me about Through The Keyhole. I was quite excited to see it make a return, especially with a new series. However, I've been quite disappointed with it. Sir David Frost is still on top form with all his catchphrases but I think it is really lacking without Lloyd Grossman. The woman who replaced him was OK, but these latest two, Lisa Snowdon and Stephanie Powers, are cringeworthy. The show also seems to be choosing the houses of obscure "celebrities" - or am I just not up to date with things?

I have to agree that ITV has far better daytime shows. When im at home and watching TV during daytime I almost always watch This Morning and whatever programme they have at 12.30pm followed by the news.

The only thing id watch on BBC1 daytime is Neighbours.
