Licence it is! Don't think they could let UTV and STV leave Breakfast cleanly and then continue for another 7 minutes (Lorraine finishes at 9:23 usually)

When I said 9:30 i meant as an estimate, I know lorraine finishes about 9:25.

An why wouldn't ITV do a news hour?

I still think they should ditch the whole Daybreak crap, and Lorraine thing and just call it...

Possibly as it would be expensive. As at the moment the 530 is just essentially to 15 minute newswheels of last nights news at ten with a bit from NBC (based on last viewing)

Or why not, from 7:00 - 9:30 have a new show called, "Wake Up With Lorraine" And have an ITV News hour from 6:00 - 7:00

Why not call it "Lorraine's Wide Awake Club" and when she isn't presenting it "Wac-A-Day with...."

I'm sure either crosschannel or anoilyrag described the new set as 'big' quite early on this discussion.

I'm hoping that they might return to something like the original GMTV 1993 set (albeit updated).

It had a few different areas, all with a common theme, but seemed a lot friendlier than what was on offer from Breakfast News at the time.

I appreciate that the first week in September is traditionally seen as the start of a new season for TV, and often used as the launch date for revamps: however, 2012 may not be the best year to follow that principle when there is going to be another (temporary) breakfast offering from C4 for the Paralympics.

Surely this will just dilute the audience even further? Wouldn't ITV be better waiting until October?

Yes, I think that Cross Channel's comment re the set was something like, "think big"!

That's even better for them because it protects them from bad media. If the ratings aren't great they have a solid reason and the press can't really report that the relaunch fell flat on its face. They aren't really going for a big relaunch anyway - they'd be advertising it by now if they were - essentially they lower key it can be the better start it will get.

That's rather like planning a 'Hare & the Tortoise Race' with the knowledge of there being another tortoise on the track.

How could it not be damaging if C4's Breakfast offering turns out to be temporarily successful?

Even being able to say "well at least we were better than C4 Paralympics" would leave ITV with essentially another failed attempt, and very little else to show for their efforts unless rating were significantly higher. Confused

I really don't know how popular the Paralympics will be, but the fact is Channel 4 are broadcasting a breakfast programme centered around an even that happens every four years and won't happen in this country again for a long time I don't see how it can be damaging to any broadcaster.

The main thing is that ITV are going low key for this relaunch, it wont be the ratings for the first month that matter it'll be once the weather goes back to normal, the olympic fever is forgotten and everyone settles into their regular habits. That will be the time when the true success or not will show through.

If the C4 Breakfast show is a success then it will be damaging and I genuinely don't know how anyone could deny that. Channel 4 could have the incentive to re-enter the breakfast TV market by finding a niche during the Paralympics.

However, going in Daybreak's favour is that the current ratings are reported from 6-8.30 (noone watches from 6-7) whereas this time they will be reported from 7-8.30 so will be much closer to 1m.
