Maybe if ITN produced Daybreak, things would be better?

Yeah because that works so well at 10 o clock every night. Rolling Eyes They lose by an even bigger margin than Daybreak.

How can anyone seriously suggest Aled Jones & Lorraine Kelly will be presenting a news & current affairs show? I'm not sure about anyone else but along with the signing of Richard Arnold, to me that screams 'lifestyle and showbiz'. .

Don't be surprised, some people on here still think there was nothing wrong with the original Daybreak! Shocked

And to finish News clearly works, my nan in the morning turns on BBC and swaps between Sky because they are informative and give up to date information..

Amazing market research 'my nan'.

like the ITV diamond jubilee coverage which won against the BBC. .

Sadly for you advertisers don't spend their money based on the opinions of the TV forum/critics. Advertisers spend their money on ratings winners.. A 3 to 1 ratings defeat is not winning! It's an even worse trouncing than last year's Royal Wedding.

But surely, Cando, you must agree ITVs coverage was better? They may have won the ratings but the complaints and critics have said otherwise.

Yeah because the BBC is the main channel, when you turn on your TV BBC is the first channel you go to so that's why you get so many viewers. ITV is never going to win the ratings ever because it is third in line, but ITV did win. I have no intention of researching the market I was just using it as an example, although you probably enjoy some of the trollop that airs on Daybreak.

Well that's a pointless argument, advertisers can't take their money to the BBC and ITV's jubilee coverage was ad free anyway. ITV fulfilled it's obligation as a PSB and the plaudits for the coverage is good for the brand.

Nobody is saying that Lorraine and Aled should present a news and current affairs show. What direction change is there for the show? Hiring a child singer to present a show suggests that the direction that the show is going in will be exactly the same as it's current format, lightweight, fluffy and off focus. Aled's hiring to me reminds of when Donal Macintyre got hired to present London Tonight, somebody who really had no experience in presenting a news program and had no real relevance with London. And I agree with you that an alternative is good but Daybreak just doesn't work for a morning show, you turn on the TV in the morning at 6am to get the news, the weather, the travel etc. Who really wants to know about some dog on a skateboard in the morning or some penguins being fed at a zoo at quarter past an hour. It just doesn't work at that time in the morning. Showbiz and light stuff should be prominent but should not be the main focus with breakfast tv. Instead of getting some showbiz star presenters Daybreak should hire more journalists, look at there sparse news team, how they could even build up a strong program with the lack of reporters is beyond me.

And you obviously haven't read the post as nobody has said that Daybreak should use the BBC diamond jubilee as a template.

And to finish News clearly works, my nan in the morning turns on BBC and swaps between Sky because they are informative and give up to date information. Daybreak needs warm, friendly presenters with an array of professional team members much like the ITV diamond jubilee coverage which won against the BBC. If you read my original post carefully then you will understand what the discussion has been about.

But Daybreak in its current form isn't really lifestyle or showbiz. Its just a bland mix of nothingness with no clear direction and as you say, off focus. But with their recent signings its clearer they have a clearer direction and they want it to be more like This Morning. That's no bad thing, and you can't say its not what people want because it has never been tried at that time in the morning whilst Lorraine uses a similar format and is successful. If people want news then they can watch BBC or Sky News, just like your nan does, but you can't deny there is a market for something 'different' in the morning (Big Breakfast did fine) and if ITV can't win with news, then its something they're going to attempt and good luck to them.

You can still get the news, weather and travel in that format. 'Lorraine' and to a lesser extent 'This Morning' both give news and weather updates, and travel comes under the regional news banner which I'm assuming will remain.

Also in terms of viewers, which is what really matters to ITV, they were beaten 3:1 by the BBC during the Diamond Jubilee coverage. They won the critics over, but being told you're good at your job doesn't pay the bills.

*ahhhhhhh*

The actual Jubilee coverage was entirely ad-free and received little promotion, which suggests they weren't concerned about ratings but rather brand reputation building and the critical response. They're never going to beat the BBC in simple viewership terms at something like that, mainly because 1 comes before 3.

People are lazy like that. Don't believe me? Observe how ratings increase whenever Andy Murray is "promoted" from BBC2 to BBC1.

You're spot on with your comments about critical reception but its one day out of the whole year. They won't be wanting to do that 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year.

Would rather use Macalolo's nan than a focus group.

Didn't ITV's news programmes pretty much always beat their BBC equivalents in the past?
