The fact that ITV won the battle of jubilee coverage through the use of credible journalism could be a lesson to Daybreak. The BBC's coverage from what I have been reading was off focus, had pointless features and had unimportant celebrity interviews. Daybreak in a way follows the BBC's diamond jubilee coverage every morning with pointless features and drivel which at times have little relevance of what viewers want in the morning. If Daybreak followed ITV's diamond jubilee approach of journalism with relevant guests then I have no doubt that the show would be so much better. I have said time and time again that I feel that viewers in the morning want to be updated with whats going on be it nationally and locally, no gimics just the facts to get viewers on there way to work or wherever. It's simple surely? ITV have showed that they can pull off a major news event, if Daybreak focussed itself it could do the same.

Maybe if ITN produced Daybreak, things would be better?

Maybe, but they work to a brief and Daybreak's production team cannot seem to decide what they want - or at least it seems that way. The programme is so unfocussed.

Following the Royal Wedding and the Diamond Jubilee coverage presented by Julie Etchingham and Philip Schofield, how do you think they two would do on Daybreak, just outta curiosity?

As Philip is so linked to This Morning, it would be easy for people to say it's exactly like This Morning.

As said above, if ITN produced Daybreak it would probably be much better than it is.

Well both are too good for Daybreak but it is the sort of partnership that would work well - basically an accessible news journalist and a presenter who actually has a brain and can handle the more serious stuff.

Looking at this, it is interesting that the Jubilee Coverage is labelled to be 'upmarket'.
Maybe this is what Daybreak needs to be, and possibly could be in September?

I absolutely agree with the comments made above. The fundamental problem for Daybreak aside from the lightweight and cheap content that is constantly the focus of criticism on this forum is the inconsistency that the programme seems to have.

As you say comparing Daybreak to the BBC's diamond jubilee coverage is a good analogy wth the programme's constant focus on pointless and inane features that have no real relevance to the core audience. Until they address this thing's in my opinion will never improve.

However, I get the impression that they are simply going to replicate the mistakes they made in 2010 and we will essentially be back to square one. Although, I could be proven very wrong.

Edit: According to AP, Richard Arnold will return to Daybreak next Monday 11th June. I suspect thing's will very quickly go down hill. Sad

Well you can never be upmarket with Richard Arnold. This will be another portion of the programme to miss.

Out of interest does anyone know how the Royal Wedding broke down in terms of demographics? Because ultimately it's the mother/ woman demographic ITV will sell advertising for Daybreak on, rather than just an overall viewer count?

How can anyone seriously suggest Aled Jones & Lorraine Kelly will be presenting a news & current affairs show? I'm not sure about anyone else but along with the signing of Richard Arnold, to me that screams 'lifestyle and showbiz'. There will obviously be elements of news but it will probably take a back seat, but at least they have a clearer direction for the future of the show and they're steering it towards an alternative to BBC Breakfast which is no bad thing, so credible journalism won't necessarily be needed and using the Diamond Jubilee coverage as a template would be pontless. We need to move away from this silly notion that Daybreak has to be a news show just because its the standard of what has gone before.

Nobody is saying that Lorraine and Aled should present a news and current affairs show. What direction change is there for the show? Hiring a child singer to present a show suggests that the direction that the show is going in will be exactly the same as it's current format, lightweight, fluffy and off focus. Aled's hiring to me reminds of when Donal Macintyre got hired to present London Tonight, somebody who really had no experience in presenting a news program and had no real relevance with London. And I agree with you that an alternative is good but Daybreak just doesn't work for a morning show, you turn on the TV in the morning at 6am to get the news, the weather, the travel etc. Who really wants to know about some dog on a skateboard in the morning or some penguins being fed at a zoo at quarter past an hour. It just doesn't work at that time in the morning. Showbiz and light stuff should be prominent but should not be the main focus with breakfast tv. Instead of getting some showbiz star presenters Daybreak should hire more journalists, look at there sparse news team, how they could even build up a strong program with the lack of reporters is beyond me.

And you obviously haven't read the post as nobody has said that Daybreak should use the BBC diamond jubilee as a template.

And to finish News clearly works, my nan in the morning turns on BBC and swaps between Sky because they are informative and give up to date information. Daybreak needs warm, friendly presenters with an array of professional team members much like the ITV diamond jubilee coverage which won against the BBC. If you read my original post carefully then you will understand what the discussion has been about.
