Kate was entertainment, rather than showbiz. Don't know if you would class that as the same thing, I would class Showbiz as what Ross King does and Entertainment as TV Reviews etc?

They really mustn't care about ratings then as it is one thing appointing Richard Arnold and quite another letting the public know about it. Absolutely nothing they've done since Adrian and Christine left has suggested to me that I should give Daybreak a try.

Totally agree Brekkie. I don't understand some of the decisions being taken. So much so I've read the first few pages of the original daybreak thread again to remind me of happier times.

The thing is guys the viewers didn't flock in during those 'happier times', audience share has been up in the past few weeks. Although you may not find many of the decision popular they are being taken by experienced programme makers with a track record of success, the programme is aimed at women with children remember. Richard was a very popular person on GMTV and wasn't the reason for its downfall. Competitions, mass sponsorship along with a lack of investment in news and quality production was.

Yet it was these very experienced programmers that sacked him in the first place. I just don't trust them anymore.

Different people making the programme now. Time has passed, things change.

But ITV aren't realising that by just going backwards to a format that wasn't working when it was axed - and there is absolutely zero suggestion now that it will work any better for them now.

I suspect one of the main reasons Daybreak failed is that it had to compromise on what it set out to do. As is so often the case in television they paniced far too early rather than just riding out the storm and giving the show the chance to set itself apart from it's predecessor rather than morph into it.

That is a very good point, the target demographic that it's now being focussed towards, I can't really comment on it. I would like to see a general breakfast programme that is entertaining & aims at all demographics, I think the only way I'm going to get that is to move abroad or hope that the big breakfast comes back.

Isn't that what BBC Breakfast is doing? That's a good mix of news, sport and entertainment and is reminiscent of the GMTV of 10 years ago.

I'm not to sure about the changes and whether I'll watch the new Daybreak, but I do like how there does seem to be a clear focus of showbiz & lifestyle which should provide a good enough alternative to BBC Breakfast for those who want it. The original Daybreak and the many versions since haven't had that focus, they've tried to do everything and have failed. If they went for Kate Garraway & Matt Barbet with a focus on news, then they're just doing what is already happening on BBC1 and increasingly over the past 5 years, BBC Breakfast have been edging them out in every way possible. Then it's the choice between adverts and no adverts.

I don't think anyone other than those in the target demographic can say what will/won't work.

BBC Breakfast just doesn't appeal to me, I don't why.
Of all programmes around nowadays, I think I'd like to see a daily programme with a format similar to Sunday Brunch, or even many of the radio breakfast shows, a light entertaining format with news updates.

I don't get to see either Daybreak or Breakfast all that often. Little snippets I have recently seen of Breakfast makes it appear a bit claustrophobic to me. It's not the size of the studio, but something else, which I can't quite pit my finger on.

Anyway, the changes taking place at Daybreak are so radical and left of field, they might just be an incredible success.

Don't have a problem with Richard Arnold returning, he's a bigger character than Steve Hargrave, and made the TV review worth watching and a bit of a laugh.

They could do worse than attempt a return to the GMTV style format of Eamon & Fiona, the problem is that BBC Breakfast is very much in that territory now. It's not Breakfast News, it's a much frothier offering.
