They quite often report ratings of well-publicised or surprisingly-good/poor shows.

X Factor springs to mind. You'd almost think it was a BBC show the way they trumpet its peak figures sometimes.

Breakfast does seem too smug, and I think that's probably due to the fact they know they'll never be beat in ratings, even if they drop the budget to 1 quid.

Not sure why you say that - GMTV beat Breakfast and Breakfast News reliably and regularly until relatively recently (and was ahead throughout most if not all of the 90s and in to the early 00s) I think Breakfast only started to edge ahead when Bill and Sian took over from Natasha and Dermot (or moved from weekends to weekdays)

Breakfast moving to Manchester might be exactly what Daybreak needs.

That's like saying if Judy Dench passed away, Katey Price would get more acting jobs.

Not at all. It's a fair point, and exactly why This Morning moved down to London: high-profile guests. There are certainly those at the Beeb who are concerned about how Breakfast will compete on guests with whatever it is ITV are offering if they're based in Manchester.

If I'm being fair (it does happen sometimes), I expressed those concerns in the Breakfast thread, and made exactly that point about This Morning.

But I said that before I saw what the alternative would be, ahead of Daybreak's launch.

Guests alone won't cut it. I don't think I can put my finger on what's lacking, but something is; and I've gone from willing it to be a good show to being quite put off by it. I tuned in to the much trumpeted Williams and Barlow shows and was left wanting.

To balance that, I watched 5 minutes of Breakfast this morning, and Charlie has all the chemistry of a stink bomb. Its positively a turn off. I really want to like him, but he reads as hard and sarcastic in most of his off-the-cuff remarks to Susannah.

So perhaps if/when Bill and Sian decide not to make the move north I'll turn to the radio - but its not going to be Daybreak unless things improve massively.

I may be contradicting myself all over the place (good presenters are key/good presenters are only a minor element/show needs good guests/guests alone won't do it) - but hey, its a tough nut to crack and I'm not being paid to crack it.

So, um, good luck with that.

It is a tough nut. Thankfully, I'm not being paid to crack it either.

This was certainly discussed at length in the Breakfast thread.

However, This Morning's move to London was perhaps as much to do with Richard & Judy's desire to base themselves there and Granada's purchase of LWT, as to get access to more guests.

Furthermore, Breakfast's celeb-fest is generally after 8:30, so could easily become a separate programme broadcast from London The simulcast with BBC News finishes at 8:30, so it wouldn't look too disjointed if the segment from 8:30-9:15 was 'Breakfast Extra', with only the same association to the main programme as Daybreak has with Lorraine.

Would be extra money to make an extra programme though wouldn't it? I'm not sure that would get an exactly positive reaction following the move. Having said that, they could easily pre-record any interviews with celebs that did not wish to head up to Manchester anyway. There are plenty of solutions.

My hunch is there will be lots of down-the-lines from London. Which is just not the same as a live interview, and requires a studio in London!
