a bit harsh, surely?

Well they get the bit about GMTV's launch wrong. They initially changed rather a lot before realising people quite liked TV-am and started changing it all back again.

It's really quite fascinating how over the decades breakfast TV viewers have never changed in how resistant they are to change, there are numerous examples...

Does the Morning News even count towards their quota of news coverage, airing at 5.30am? If it doesn't they could scrap it - even if it does, it wouldn't be too difficult to make up for with a few extra minutes here and there (a 9.25am summary every day would be great).

It does count towards the news output required - though I think they exceed their quota a little, hence the 5.30am becoming 5.55am over Christmas/New Year

The problem would be in moving the output elsewhere in the schedule is that the morning news is 3.5 hours/210 minutes a week of news. Not easy to make up elsewhere unless the morning news simply moved earlier in the night

Why not extend new gmtv/daybreak to 5.30am?

Daybreak would not count as 'news' I would have thought, and wouldn't that play havoc with the breakfast license?

Live from Studio Five counted as news.

Is it a franchise committment that 0530-0600 is news output?

Doesn't need to. Even if STV/UTV don't take the first 30 minutes, provided there's a clean opt point there shouldn't be any issues. Remember Daybreak is just a programme. If ITV wanted they could move it to be shown 2pm - 4.30pm, and put repeats of pop idol out in the morning instead (although they might have to show a few minutes of regional news). This isn't moving the times of the breakfast franchise, just the programming that they're putting out. STV/UTV would have to show [hand control over to] pop idol between 0600-0925, but could opt out from showing Daybreak in the afternoon.

Even before ITV took over the breakfast franchise, there was nothing stopping GMTV from contracting ITN to provide the first hour of programming (and subsequent bulletins), it's just they decided it would be cheaper/easier for them to do it in-house. They could (after negotiation with ITV) have even got it branded at ITV News.

No, but as commented, moving the 5:30 news doesn't make sense from a business point of view, unless it was moved to earlier in the night, in which case moving Daybreak to 5:30 also makes no sense.

Oh yes, I forgot about that. Bloody ridiculous. Daybreak perhaps could be counted as news then, and perhaps rebranding the morning news as part of Daybreak is feasible, although I fail to see what it would achieve.

So it's not just football matches that get interrupted by adverts. A promo for Piers Morgan just accidentally aired whilst interviewing Richard Bacon.

they didnt, it was just a test to see if they worked well together to be the main presenters for the show.

What does Tasmin do now? She doesn't seem to be up to much ever on Twitter. I'm just wondering how she's paying the bills!
