If ITV NEWS ever did a 6-7am slot as a news hour, then it will still have to be from the Daybreak set, as ITV NEWS will be too dark to invite viewers who start to tune in during the hour.

It's not a problem for the morning news though - although I get what you're saying.

I'd still go for a cheap and chearful 15 minute news format from 6-8am, with Lorraine (preferbly rebranded as she's off half the time) from 8-9.25am doing more lifestyle and showbizzy stuff, including the celeb interviews.

Not quite sure why I was thinking about this earlier today, but it would basically be news headlines every 15 minutes, with Sport at 6.08am, 6.52am and 7.22am, Business News at 6.22am, regional news at 6.38am, 7.08am and 7.38am and showbiz news at 7.52am. National weather would be just before the half hour and hour, while they're be shorter news updates during the new Lorraine style show at 8.15am and 9am.

They'd be nothing flashy about the news service at all - it would be straight to the point 15 minute round ups, just with slight changes towards the end of each 15 minutes so that although their main selling point is getting everything you need to know in 15 minutes, they've got a hook to keep people watching that little bit longer. Perhaps too slightly change the emphasis of the news bulletins so those at the top of the hour are more UK focused and those at quarter past/quarter to slightly more global focused. Essentially though you'd have 3-4 main headline stories then further stories rotating throughout the morning.

If they were to keep the Daybreak brand I'd call the 6-8am slot Daybreaking News then 8-9.25am Daybreak with Lorraine - ditching the Lorraine part while she is off.

They ought to leave Lorraine Kelly and her show alone... it gets decent ratings so why tarnish that with the pre 8:30 turd, which has wrecked the careers of Adrian & Christine, Tasmin and Kirsty.

Rolling Eyes He was never a GMTV favourite , he was one of the things that turned people off GMTV.

Wasn't he on a programme called The Sunday Show many years ago as 'Soapy Dick'?

The Mirror article is interesting but the main points are contradicted by another article in the Mail Online.... although I've no idea which to trust less!

The suggestion in the Mirror article re. calling it 'Lorraine' is be a terrible idea, As others have suggested, if they are to change the name then the obvious choice is something along the lines of 'Good Morning' - it has an almost 30 year heritage on ITV.

I agree with the News hour 'idea' for ITV's Breakfast programming between 6 and 7. I'd personally just brand that section as a 1 hour 'ITV News' bulletin, with a 5 minute Regional News (Weather and Travel) bulletin at the end*.

* With the other minutes required at present scrapped by Ofcom/ITV (probably as part of ITV News's rumoured ahem... 'rebrand').

The problem with having an ITV News branded first hour is that it would be 1.5 hours of ITV News (5:30am-7:00am) have they got that much resources at that time in the morning? I mean I'm not sure what there news quota is but i imagine that the 5:30 news is likley to be there to fulfil this quota so they can't axe it as Technically ITV breakfast is a seprerate station like GMTV and TV:am. I mean the 5:30 news at the moment is Usaully just a repeat of yesterday's reports possibly with the reporter pre-recording something just before they leave. And if your lucky Yao Chin and/or the presenter will do a report. So it would likley end up be repeating the Same stories.

I'm not against this idea, in fact it might be good, IF they have the resources to do it. Even though ITV News hasn't got a brilliant reputation for hard news, it might add a bit more of a serious tone. And then brand the news updates as 'ITV News' as well.

If it is has something to do with the news quota, then when not axe The Morning News and divide the time between the Lunchtime news and News At Ten...

e.g.
1330 ITV Lunchtime News
1410 ITV National Weather
1412 Commercial Break
1416 Regional News Update and Weather
1426 Commercial Break

2200 ITV News At Ten
2240 ITV National Weather
2242 Commercial Break
2246 Regional News Update and Weather
2256 Commercial Break

And then its only 60 minutes worth of ITV News at the start of the morning

Basically each news slot would then be 60 minutes long - which also includes regional news!

That makes no sense. If they have to have a quota of news, they're best putting it where advertising revenues would be low anyway, allowing more popular programmes to air during the day/evening and thus increasing advertising.

Exactly - the 5.30am bulletin surely only survives to meet some kind of quota, and ITV have shown no appetite for extending other bulletins in recent times. If ITV did want the Morning News as part of the breakfast slot they'll just flutter their eye lashes at OFCOM.

And yet at one time a commercial during News At Ten actually commnded more revenue than a commercial during Coronation Street.

Have times really changed that much or has the emphasis on type of revenue programming changed?

But, also, isn't it weird that many call for a more news centric breakfast show from ITV, yet news seems to be a non-revenue provider!!! Contradictory or what?
