When regional news mattered to the Channel 3 licence.

As we know ITV don't really care that much for regional news , and given the chance would remove it from their schedules completely - which from a personal point of view would be completely wrong thing to do.

Unless a different broadcaster took over the funding of this. There must be alternative to the BBC with regards to regional news, but that doesn't necessarily have to be ITV. I don't quite understand the logistics of this, but couldn't someone like Sky News provide such a service to be broadcast on ITV, in the same way Sky provided Channel 5 News? I'm not saying that they would want to but rather is it possible?

Whats the point of handing back to Kate and Dan for them to laugh about the last news story and then say 'join us after the news where you are'? Can't Lucy do it? Nice view as the eased out but they need more than one sting, gets extremely repetitive and boring!

GMTV used to do this on the newshour, at 6:35, Priya would hand to the regions not Penny or John! But then I seem to remember that after 7, at 7:00/8:00 Penny would go back to Kate/ Ben/ Andrew/ Emma for a little bit Untill handing over to the regions!

Hmm.. Repetitive and Boring, eh? I know someone who is exactly that.

Anyway, that's enough of a sly dig for now...

GMTV did handover to the regions from the news desk for a period of time, and used the channel ident/generic sting. Whatever you wish to call it... I don't see why they haven't got a bulletin after 8, unless they've come to the realisation that no-one watches then...

I've started watching BBC Breakfast myself, and whereas sometimes I find it can get a bit too serious for my 6am wake-up call, the news they provide, both nationally and regional is fantastic, and they do have their 'moments' too.

Daybreak, WIPE THE SLATE CLEAN! Come up with a consistant schedule, high quality of news and a format similar to that of 7's Sunrise and NBC Today. Can't be that hard, can it?! There's no room for a serious news breakfast show anymore in this country with the BBC and Sky. Something softer, but not too soft, to connect with THE WHOLE AUDIENCE, not just hassled mums. Sheesh, I'm off to watch Morning Glory!

The regional bulletins tend to be news, weather and travel with most watching for the weather and travel. At 8.15am, most hassled mums are probably already doing or have done the school run so don't need to know anymore, and the peak viewing is between 7-8am. I'm sure at one point GMTV went down to just 2 regional bulletins but they were 3 minutes long (instead of 3 bulletins at 2 minutes) which could be something Daybreak should look at doing in the 7am hour. It would give it that much needed structure.

All change on Lorraine since she came back! Now they open with the ped moving forward and down towards the review table, rather than the jib straight across the studio. The close is now just the main part of the theme fading in just as Lorraine stops talking! One question, does Lorraine have any editorial input since it is 'her' show?

I think the intro is more to do with her being unable to dash across the studio with her leg injury.

Doh! You can't expect her to walk in those heels... Razz

Alex Beresford leaving ITV West/Westcountry to become the 'face of weather' at Daybreak, his guest spot on March 16 went well then!

Sky News would need to be paid though and it is probably cheaper for ITV to do it in-house as Sky would need to set up regional bases etc.

I've long argued that the regional segment of ITV should be treated separately to the ITV Network and that with ITV not willing to provide the service the franchises for providing the regional aspects (news and 30-60 minutes of programming a week) should be put out to tender in England at least and they would be affiliates of the ITV network. For Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland the full channel should be put out to tender.

If Sky did want to get involved in regional news and bring it to TV it would probably be better (for them at least) to do it through the Sky News channel - although regionalising that would require multiple simulcasts. I do think though a regional news service as part of a national news channel is a more viable option than the other local TV services on the table.

What you mentioned in your second paragraph is more what I meant rather than ITV paying Sky for the services. Using Channel 5 News as an example probably wasn't the best.

I think ITV are, in comparison to Sky, shrinking. Therefore, if Sky became the biggest commercial broadcaster in terms of revenue, then they should have increased public service remits, with ITV's decreasing. (Granted, I don't know the figures and I'm just making them up as I go along, but the principle still stands).
