Seems to be a lot of guesswork and pre-emptive covering (*shock*) going on in that article - "this definitely is happening but then again it might not so this might instead".

Logical enough but about as reliable as your average 15 year old forum speculator.

According to this article, Lorraine Kelly is the answer to Daybreaks problems.

She will get an extended role, starting at 7am.

I think this is speculation - I cannot see this happening. The "Lorraine" show is working - so why break it?!

I think you alway's have to treat some articles with a pinch of salt but it would be interesting if there was any validity with the reports that Lorraine Kelly will be appointed the main presenter alongside Matt Barbet. As Jamesrl has said I believe the current format for Lorraine's stand alone show is working fine. I don't think it would be helpful to radically change that aspect of the format.

The biggest problem is with the current Daybreak format being too lightweight and inconsistent along with too many adverts and competitions. They need to address this first of all perhaps they could re-introduce a newshour like they had with GMTV without any advert breaks. Then move onto the main show then Lorraine's slot as a seperate show.

I think Matt Barbet would be a good choice for male anchor alongside Helen Fospero. As I've said before they would make a very good partnership. They could keep Kate and Dan as the main relief presenter's for the show to cover for holidays etc.

It's been great to see John Stapleton fronting Daybreak again this week. If they could get him to present 2 days a week I think ratings would rise (however everybody is entitled to their own opinions). This week has shown how Dan is completely out of his depth presenting the show compared to John.

I also thought the interview with the Deputy Prime Minister was good but was really short as they ran out of time. The producers need to seriously consider how the prioritise certain items.

Well that Lorraine thing from 7 would make sense?! Daybreak moving to tackle hassled mums? So Lorraine could be the key to targeting them?

Probably an idea lifted from a forum or elsewhere - if they did that they'd have to axe Lorraine completely IMO ratther than have her stay on an hour with her own show. Personally for me if they wanted to capitalise on Lorraine I would move the start time to 8am and then have a revamped more news based Daybreak from 6-8am. The celeb guests and features would go to Lorraine and Daybreak would go for a fairly basic format of essentially 15 minute updates, but trying to supplement them with interviews about the stories of the day so it's not just looped content.

That is not necessarily a bad shout

So basically we're wanting a GMTV style NewsHour then a GMTV style Today style show then Lorraine as a standalone?

I wouldn't want a GMTV style anything! Laughing

Basically I'd make Daybreak a fast paced news show aimed at viewers wanting to catch the news within a 15-30 minute period before leaving the house - plus an emphasis on topical guests (either in the studio or via satellite) reacting to the mornings news rather than celebrity guests. The features and interviews etc. would move to Lorraine.

Whether or not ratings would rise for the Daybreak portion I don't know - but I think this format would come in a lot cheaper than what they currently do so even with the same or slightly lower viewing numbers it could be more profitable - and offer more of an alternative to Breakfast.

What will happen during summer holidays and half terms? Replace it with CITV?

Was that not the idea of RI:SE (mk I) to offer everything you needed to know in half an hour, then have various reports?

I agree with you Brekkie that Lorraine as a programme wouldn't exist (in name), as there would be a co host involved, plus it's never made sense with Friday's & school holidays anyway. But presentation & content wise, maybe they could attempt to move 'Lorraine' earlier. There's obviously an audience for that type of programme, why not capitalise on that with a longer similar programme.
Just add in extra news updates, keep the same sort of lifestyle features, cookery, the way that they do their newspaper review that I've always preferred, and utilise what's already present in terms of reporters.
Make more of the ITV Morning News by running that (in a news hour style) until 7am, cut out Daybreak altogether, and have a longer 'Lorraine' type programme.

Has there ever been a breakfast TV programme solely hosted by a female before?
Could current Lorraine work with sole host & specialist colleagues for news updates, sport, weather, etc. in the same way that Sky's Sunrise does?
