Daybreak - the launch onwards

06:00 - BBC Breakfast: 1.3m (32.4%)
06:00 - Daybreak: 980,000 (24.4%)

I didn't think it would beat Breakfast on day one, but still quite a strong start for Daybreak. The floods of people on the Facebook page saying they wouldn't watch were obviously joking then! The 980,000 is good compared to GMTV's usual 750,000 or 20% share.

What did the final GMTV get?

I thought it looked rather messy there with everyone piled onto the sofa.

I agree. It seemed like they were on the sofa just to show off how many people they have working on it rather than to bring something to the TOTH.

One main niggle is that many of the pieces are only one sentence long, such as the correspondent introductions and all the regional news.

Adrian will use more words introducing Lucy than Lucy will actually say in her intro.

"Lucy is our weather women, what's in store in the weather today Lucy?"
"It's going to be a windy day across the UK"
"Kate's here also with the..."

It was very noticable on the regional news, extend the stories to at least two sentances please!

The regional news needs to be extended to 3 minutes and there should be another bulletin at 7:45 (& 8.15), who came up with the idea of having the last bulletin at 7:15? All the crews and presenters will still be there I expect!

The introductions at the TOTH were also made worse because of this, as you said. One sentence introductions and 'in brief' segments sound very clumsy. 7:15 is a very strange time to have the last regional news bulletin. There should at least be another at 7:45.

It seems there's a new introduction the newsreaders have to use for the regional news:- "Your local travel and weather is less than a minute away, first the Daybreak headlines here in the <insert region name> region" - or slight variations on this.

That got on my nerves. Not only are the bulletins too short but they're taken up by such a long-winded, pointless introduction. A simple 'Good morning' would suffice, bringing more time for news.

The titles are fine, they're nice, but the music just ends so clunkily. Why can't it go into a nice bed for the studio shot?

I agree - the titles are quite nice and suprisingly not cheesy for live shots of people - but the way the titles end, there's a little pause, and then a sting into the studio is very odd. Would be much nicer if it went into a bed.

I'm not keen on the graphics at all. They look cheap and I think if they were a mock on here people would slate them. It's very strange how the name strap doesn't line up with the clock.

Haven't seen it today but looking at the clips of yesterday's Lorraine, she ought not to walk into the studio at the start - it looks like she's marching to the music and I actually laughed when I saw it.

Daybreakers and this whole 5 thing was a bit cringy, as was the live shots during the weather. I don't think the show can make up its mind whether it's news or fluff. It seemed to jump about a bit too much - one minute they're talking to John Stapleton about some "serious" news, then they're doing the Daybreakers, then looking at some strange car and then interviewing Tony Blair.

Not too keen on the way Adrian and Dan stand at the sports desk - think they're going for the "men standing at the bar talking sport" look?

Other than that I thought it was okay. It's not as good as I think it's been bigged up to be and I won't be leaving Breakfast personally.

Isn't it fine for ex prime ministers to be referred to as prime ministers, same with American presidents?

I might be wrong but I think it should be ex- or former prime minister.

Also, interesting to note that 2 and a half hours of Daybreak got a longer montage than 17 years of GMTV...

Well what else do you expect from a live breakfast show?

In all honesty Daybreak didn't deserve to beat Breakfast. Although I love the Daybreak set, overall it is just too muddled and short on substance. I'll be returning to Breakfast from tomorrow.

I thought LoT's comment was sarcastic, even if he didn't.

'Breaking News' on Daybreak, assuming that it's serious, would have to be dealt with in the same way as Newsround approaches its audience, and also have to take into account the limited abilities of one of the main presenters. 'Dumbed-down' is quite probably the maximum setting.

I can't honestly see a sombre-looking Christine Bleakley announcing that war had just started in Iraq, for example.

Although probably an intelligent individual, her screen persona gives the impression that she probably has to google the answer to their premium rate phone competitions.

OK, I havent seen the show live, I have just seen whats on youtube.

The good points-

-The studio is good
-Some of the graphics are good also.
-Christine is on the show

The bad points-

-I don't like the purple that seems to be everywhere, including the logo that someone seems to have designed when they didn't have anything else to do.

- I don't know if this was just for the first show, but the constant refrance to the sun rising and 'Daybreak' got a bit anoying after a few mentions.
- Its like The One Show, but in the morning, but with more news and sport.
- The studio only looks good when it gets light, so on bad winter mornings, it will look worse for longer.
- Adrian doesn't suit breakfast TV

All in all, I will be staying on the BBC, Im sure they will have a studio that's looks over Salford when they move.

For me, BBC Breakfast seems better for me, because it is more news. Daybreak is just a new version of GMTV

Judging by this picture from JPG's blog, I assume that some of the cameras are fixed and the others are sat trucks (i.e. Cambridge, Cardiff and Birmingham are sourced from the uPod's). ]

Either they're fixed of their sat trucks that have come up before the others.

I wonder how long that will last, it can't be cheap

To say that the opening titles are clichéd is to say that everyday life is clichéd. It's what people do in the mornings - jog, walk the dog, make breakfast. There's no getting away from it. What would you do? Depict some alternate made-up reality just so that you can say it's never been shown on TV before?

Eh? who says it has to 'depict reality' at all?
Do the titles of BBC Breakfast, The One Show, Loose Women, or TVam, The Big Breakfast etc. show real life?

It did look a little like a Media Studies project to me.... except much better shot

Complain to someone else that the backdrop to your region doesn't provide a sunrise on time, not ITV.

Oh I'm sorry I thought this was an internet forum for expressing opinions. Rolling Eyes

I'm not complaining, just pointing out an atheistic point.... which again has gone right over your head (it's not to do with a sunrise!) To be honest, it's not as if I'm ever going to watch the programme (again)

Well I liked today's show (What i seen of it) and thought it was better than yesterdays (even though yesterday was good).

I Think its going to provide serious competition for breakfast but there is a few things they need to fix.

/ Regional news- no one cares if tdhere local travel and weather is less than a min away just get on with presenting the news.

/ Christine laughing uncontrolbly at things which just are not funny.

/ The sport coverage needs to be better more detail and less lads down the pub feel with Adrian and Dan

/ Grannire is just not working for me as features editor I dont think it suits her and I would swap her and kate around.

/ Less breaks I know it's were they get there revenue but it could be shortened a bit .

Apart from that 10/10 and looking forward to watching tommorow.
