What really gets me is that they see their ratings rise when they deliver good, serious news like Osama Bin Laden's death, but the day after, they persist with the same, inane rubbish. Isn't it quite simple what they have to do? It's as if they purposely want a terrible program with awful ratings. It makes no sense.
The whole boys wearing skirts came out of the newspaper report about the school kid going to school in a skirt because he wasn't allowed to wear shorts. They joked at the end that they should all wear skirts but that's a joke that should have been left there.
It got worse by the way, when Richard Madely came along and gave them a blast with a leaf blower - WHY?!
It's as if they purposely want a terrible program with awful ratings. It makes no sense.
A cynic would suggest that maybe they are looking for a reason to drop the breakfast programme all together. But I think they really think this stuff is a winner.
I can only imagine they're assuming they'll still get this One Show/GMTV mix right at some point and the public will fall in love with it. I think it's only time before ITV give up on management and bring in a very different team.

To be fair, BBC Breakfast ratings also go up and then slip as the stories die off as do all news programmes, that's just the way it works.

The current management are fine, they just need a clear direction to take the programme. Some days it is quite news orientated and works quite well whereas others it is more filler. Its really erratic and viewers need to know what to expect.

Management set the tone of the show and decide what direction it should go in. I'd point out that In America the Executive Producer (or editor here) of The Early Show (CBS's third ranking morning show) has just been sacked after major (leaked email) criticism from CBS News bosses on tone and substance. ITV don't always make the right calls, but I think it's fair to say Daybreak's producers have tried to do something new and unique and, in terms of shifting GMTV/Daybreak out of the second-ranking slot, have failed to make a difference.

I think you've misunderstood what I meant, the current producers have proven themselves time and time again to be competent and put together a good and informative programme. But most of the time it is like a One Show/GMTV mash up and it doesn't work. ITV need to decide on the direction that they want to go in, not 'do mainly fluffy items and then cover big news stories when they break'.
There was also an error of judgement with the Kate & Gerry McCann interview on todays Lorraine. By all means have them on Lorraine, but they should have had them on Daybreak too because now they are allover the news on Lorraine and not Daybreak. That was one strength of GMTV- it always managed to make the news itself.
I don't see why the stick of the men skirt segment. It's a 2hr 30min show and is not a news channel. I don't see anyone moaning when Today in America throws a wedding or does stupid segments. That said they do tend to get the balance well.
Me and the family actually found it quite funny, perfect wake up relief for the mornings.
Same here, it did drag a bit with the leaf blower, but yeah it was pretty funny. Still don't like the use of competitions into the local news.
I also agree. They may do well at the main stories when they break, but they're trying to be something different to the newsier alternative, and I enjoyed it. I think if they had longer on the air that this wouldn't be so bad later in the morning. Maybe people's opinions stem from the timings that items air at. Then again, look at something like this morning whose running order leaps from serious, to fun with the separation of an ad break or competition, and that's received well by viewers.
