I agree, it now looks very cluttered. They should drop the blinds and remove the orange and yellow screens, especially when its daylight. Over the next few weeks with the clocks going forward it might be a bit dark at 6am, but nothing they couldn't solve by presenting the first half hour or or so from the clock wall and then moving around the sofa as it gets lighter.
I had visions of men running on with Christine mid sentence, moving her...
I suppose what they could do is introduce some purple cushions to the sofa area, as red and purple do compliment each other, as can be seen in the greeen room, where they have retained the old smaller purple sofas with red cushions.
The minute you put scatter cushions on a TV sofa you are throwing in the towel...
Although it is good that the purple sofa raised money for charity I do wonder if it pre-planned. How easy is it to get a sofa like that at last minute?
I think you know the answer to that question.
Cheap and nasty TV sofas can be built at very short notice by prop/set manufacturers. (Depending on the fabric - a day or five)
Decent, properly made upholstered sofas have a minimum lead time of around 3 weeks (and you'll pay over the odds)
It is obvious that Ant'n'Dec were set-up to take the old sofa because the new one was already on-order.
I'm not sure on the red sofa, the shape is nice, but like others have said other things need to change also, we'll see what happens. It's a shame that the original idea of having a minimilistic set based around the windows went through the window.
Interesting that they've created those part slides to cover construction work, surely it would be easier to use the plant boxes that they already had and place them directly in front of the window.

Yes, TV sofas aren't as comfortable as the ones you have in your house. I had a job interview on a retired TV sofa once and it certainly didn't put me at ease!

It's all pretty rudimentary, and a bit of a learning curve we didn't need to see.
Intellectually I know I prefer the sleek purple and shiny wood concept. But it appears cold and stark on screen. Nice in architects digest, but clinical and unwarming to watch over breakfast. People respond warmly to warm colours. Lighting filters have existed for over 70 years to set an "emotional scene" with colour.
GMTV don't have any ownership of the concept, they just understood and utilised it.
If it all ends up orange and yellow and red, it's because it looks comfortable - not necessarily that they want to emulate GMTV.
Bit late to be thinking about basics like this, though.

That is exactly it. They just remember that GMTV used oranges and reds, so does Breakfast, ergo, BBC Breakfast is copying GMTV - STOP THE PRESSES. and before that - TV-AM!

So what would you say of the quality of a sofa like Breakfast's, or that of Newsnight in the 2006-10 era? Presumably Breakfast paid for a rather good sofa if they only reupholstered it at the last relaunch?

IIRC isn't part of the concept also to stop you slouching and thus preventing a crotchtastic view?
I think the colour of the sofa is fine. But the size is just ugly! Here I have drafted what the old style sofa could look like in red: (apologies for crude editing)
I hope you'll agree that a lower backed sofa makes sure the view is utilised better (granted, this is a wide shot). I also like the idea that Chiles and Bleakly could sit in the middle of the sofa; instead of the awkward angle at which they currently sit.
