I remember a similar situation back in the early 80's, for those of you old enough to remember. The BBC's flagship evening current affairs programme, Nationwide, was retired in favour of a new venture, to be named "Sixty Minutes". It was launched amidst much pomp and ceremony, yet failed fairly early on for a multitude of reasons.

The BBC had made the decision to replace experienced anchor Desmond Willcox with Sarah Kennedy, who at that point was primarily known for the very light Game For A Laugh.

Not sure you've got that quite right - or I'm misreading your post.

Desmond Willcox launched 60 Minutes - replacing the previous Nationwide team. Desmond wasn't a Nationwide presenter - he was put in place as the main anchor for 60 Minutes. It wasn't the case that Sarah Kennedy replaced him when 60 Minutes launched.

60 Minutes was a bit confusing - as at that point the BBC South East region worked differently to most - and the network presenters for 60 Minutes effectively did the regional news opt as well (not Desmond ISTR - but Sarah Kennedy, Sally Magnusson etc.)

And when 60 Minutes started Sarah Kennedy wasn't allowed to present it because she was still under contract to LWT. She appeared to say hello in the first edition but only started as a regular presenter a few weeks later.

Dan & Kate presenting Daybreak

on monday it is dan lobb and katy hill the one from bluepeter

Never heard of her would it harm you to provide a source or some information about this because to be honest I find it hard to believe with the amount of options Daybreak has to have presenters with Tasmin being Muslim I imagine she would work as normal , Kate working every other day . I find it hard to believe they would have some no body present it.

Huh? You been on the mulled wine, Gino? Oh wait you're too young! (Says me!). I remember Katy Hill, although that was probably before your time too! As lovely as she is, she doesn't seem the Daybreak newsy journo type?

" I find it hard to believe they would have some no body present it"... What do you mean? Just no one turns up? I find it hard to believe that you can suggest such a thing. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there to present Daybreak if Ade, Chris, Dan and Kate were unavailable. I would happily do it, but I wont be able to get from London to Bangor in time to get to work at the Next sale. #AwfulPlug

Radio Times reporting that Adrian and Christine presenting on Monday.

Anyway! I'd like to take this chance and wish everyone here on TVF a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
P.S. Gino - Better get to bed early tonight! Santa only comes when you're sleeping! I believe Fisher Price have a range of items for your age range at this time of year

Firstly we've been through this Gino's my dogs name , My name is Daniel. By I find it hard to believe they would have some no body present it".. I meant that outside these four there is plenty of people who work for Daybreak who could present it with Dan such as Tasmin will not be off as she does not celebrate christmas there are correspondents etc.

Daybreak is more of an entertainment programme and the main presenter does not present a single news item that is the Newsreaders job so this Blue Peter presenter does not need to worry and frankly I struggle to see why Dan who acts like he is on a playground when presenting has been given some Kids presenter to present with.

Also I didant watch Blue Peter when I was growing up and I don't know why a 15 year old would want fisher rice items.

Fisher Rice? I'll have mine egg fried thanks...

I really don't need you to tell me what kind of programme Daybreak is. I watch it - I know what it is! I'm totally baffled by the part where you say 'the presenter doesn't present a single news item that's the newsreaders job'. I'm not even gonna go there!

I'm with Jugalug when he says "Yuck! How outrageous that you think you would know somebody from the telly's plans for this period based on their religion?". Yeah! She's Muslim! Just drag her into work over Christmas cos she ein't really gonna give a monkeys, is she? Such an ignorant little boy...

BACK TO Daybreak!

I'm rather looking forward to hearing about how the nobody does on Monday! Will they be changing the name from 'Cool Before School' to 'Here's one I made earlier'... Laughing Oh, and did they do anything to close this morning for Christmas? GMTV usually had Roy Wood sing 'Wish it could be Christmas everyday'. I was having a well deserved lie-in during the school holidays! Very Happy

Noggin and Sands, you are both correct. I wasn't suggesting that Willcox was part of the Nationwide team, only that he was the launch (lead) anchor for SM and was eventually replaced in that role by Kennedy who, as you both confirm, joined SM much later, by which time Willcox had already "left" the programme, at least in front of the cameras.. (IIRC, Kennedy joined around 4-6 months after the programme's launch, and not a few weeks).

Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that the Katy Hill scenario has some similarities, I.e. a presenter more known for her variety/childrens/popular/pop/teen/"non-news" background (as was Sarah Kennedy at the time) moving into a slightly newsier/harder agenda programme doesn't necessarily mean it will be a failure. Kennedy wasn't a failure on SM (it was the programme itself that was dodgy). Maybe Katy will fit well with Daybreak in a similar manner, whatever the intended length of her tenure.

Back to Daybreak, Katy Hill seems like quite an unsuitable choice. No problem with the woman herself, but she doesn't seem suited to this kind of show - This Morning or 'Lorraine', perhaps, but not Daybreak. Of course, Adrian isn't known for his Paxman-style interviews, and Christine won't be presenting News at Ten any time soon.

Two words - Anthea Turner. Was she any more qualified when she began on GMTV. Indeed although it's probably a decade since she left Katy Hill probably learned a lot more about the world on Blue Peter than Christine would have done on The One Show.

People forget this isn't Newsnight - it's a breakfast magazine show.

Merry Christmas, "Daniel". Look, Santa's already in Africa... He'll be down your chimney any moment now!

...Desmond Willcox...
Got to ask... is he in any way related to our Tim?

People expect because BBC Breakfast is serious and boring, stuckup and always shamingly plugging BBC shows, that every other breakfast show should be. People can't get it into their heads that not everyone wants serious rolling news in the morning.

Tell that to ITV. At the moment Day Break is like a failed news programme (not enough serious news) combined with a failed entertainment programme (too much serious news).

I think Breakfast is professional and well made. People see men in suits and think it's all po-faced and serious all the time but it isn't. Bill Turnball is brilliant. And Breakfast plug BBC shows the same way Daybreak plugs ITV shows. And as well they should.

I'd point out that someone like Louise Minchin can present a programme like The One show with no problem - and ultimately The One Show is huge inspiration for Daybreak. Despite being an experienced broadcast journalist, she's more than capable of presenting light entertainment programming.

I'm not saying Daybreak needs to be competing with Newsnight, but its on screen talent and production crew could still have proper broadcast experience. I think GMTV's major problem was it wasn't serious enough - in the sense of seeming the cheap breakfast equivalent.

And once again I'd point out to Ginofish that Tasmin Lucia Khan - the woman who does represent news and journalism for this programme - is hardly a credible journalist.

At least Daybreak has a broad spectrum to plug shows, not like Breakfast where its always Stricly or Doctor Who. Daybreak and GMTV always pluggs shows from other brodcasters regulary. And no they shouldn't really on public money.
