On a side note, that MTV website is a joke. Click on an article and 5 auto-playing videos scattered throughout the page start blaring out a mishmash of sound that will destroy your ears. Worse thing is that all 5 are for Geordie Shore. Jesus wept.
I'm convinced it's a compulsory punishment for anybody who accesses any MTV media looking for something remotely related to music.
One has to wonder what going to happen when The queen passes away, If this is what bowie is getting.
From someone that's worked in radio for most of my I life I shall tell you why.
He had over 20 UK top 10 hits, spanning nearly 3 decades. He is one of the few artists who was able to re-invent his music 'brand' and image over those decades, not just from the Ziggy Stardust era. Not many artists have done that, I can only think of a few exceptions such as Frank Sinatra or Madonna. He's one of the UK's biggest pop exports with his music popular worldwide, especially in Canada. His music and style has influenced a large section of today's music and artists. He's also one of the most popular and familiar artists played on British radio, even today.
It's quite right that his achievements should be showcased and comparing it to 'what would happen if the Queen died' is a bit ridiculous as they are completely different scenarios.
Elsewhere, there's an hour of Bowie music videos on MTV Music at 8.00pm if you'd prefer, although they're on all day on MTV Classic and VH1, under 'David Bowie: A Tribute'.

That has given me a crash course in his excellent career, at least you weren't rude.

For a moment I thought you were describing Digital Spy!
(Conveniently, their early breakfast show comes from Salford, which meant that Chris Hawkins was available to pop into the Breakfast studio after he'd gone off air.)
Shaun Keaveney and (I think) Matt Everett appeared in the news channel studio after they came off air from the breakfast show too.
They were alongside Paul Gambuchini because he is to popular music what Simon Calder is to travel...
That has given me a crash course in his excellent career, at least you weren't rude.
I wonder if anyone will admit to this gem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SQdBxVjZx4 I shall drink to his crowning career.
Played this in my local this afternoon after being introduced to it by a mate. Loved it!
Cant believe people are just still only finding out about that song. It used to be played alot on the radio in Scotland.
