He was all over TV at one point, then he suddenly vanished around the mid 90s. I remember thinking he had died until I saw him on TV in the mid-00s.

According to some of his obituaries today, he said his comments in 2004 that climate change was 'poppycock' cost him his career. Clearly they won't have helped, but as you say, his career was clearly on the wane well before then.
