Looks like the Top Gear episode currently being shown is also from an early series. It features the black stig, and some more 'affordable' cars compared to the current series.
On a related note I see that Fifth Gear will also be appearing on Dave.
Any idea which series of Whose Line is now being shown on Dave. I assume it must be one of the first couple of series based on Clive explaining the rounds, footage seeming lighter, and Clive's hairline.
The very first with the episode saying '1988' on the production slide, and show beginning the same year
Thanks for the tip off, I was getting a tad bored of them showing the 1993-96 series constantly, it makes a change to see the earlier ones, without having to pay to watch it on DVD of course.
The early ones don't seem as good really, as though there's something missing from them. Maybe they weren't quite used to the format at that stage. And it was strange seeing Peter Cook smoking on screen when he was introduced.
I caught a couple of episodes from Series 1 on 4oD, and they do indeed seem quite slow, but I guess this was largely due to it being a new format.
I've noticed they've reverted back with Top Gear as James has very short hair and the Copyright was 2003, so hopefully there'll be a better run this time and not suddenly jumping and skipping several episodes from the 2007 series, I think I saw the Africa one three times in the space of 24 hours, but that was a superb Top Gear.
Has anyone noticed that Dave has a new announcer? Greg James moved to BBC3 and they now have Ralph Ineson (Finchy from The Office)
I think Ralph Ineson has been on Dave for a while now, he has a very strong Yorkshire accent, it's hard not to tell him, and he ain't to bad at being a continuity announcer.
Do Dave ever show the first series of the the return of Top Gear, i.e. the series with Jeremy & Richard, but not James May?
I think UK Horizons showed the first series, but i don't think UKTVG2/Dave have. To be fair it's actually fairly ropey a lot of Series 1. The bits with Jason Dawes especially are dire, probably why James replaced him in the first place. Though they are about to start showing Fifth Gear, so anything is possible.

Why don't they ever show the original Top Gear (1977-2001)? Were they unable to get the rights?
While they're both phenomenal programmes, Classic Top Gear > Current Top Gear.
I think the later Top Gears when Clarkson, VBH and Tiff were on the scene were very good, but i recently downloaded some old ones from before 1991, and my god they were boring. There was a whole 20 minute segment on converting your car for unleaded petrol. While undoubtedly useful for people who needed it at the time, it was hardly entertainment. But then Top Gear was never really supposed to be entertainment primarily originally was it? Even the Clarkson segments (his first year i believe) were quite boring, and his style of presenting still hadn't come through yet. He was even talking in a RSC style voice!

UK Horizons didn't show full old episodes, they showed the best bits, ISTR a few occassions when they had clips of Noel Edmonds driving an old Fiat from the early 1980's, but UKH programme stopped after a while.
