How long did they use this clock? I assume no later than 1983 when they updated their symbol.
It looks rather unsatisfactory. The 'digital clock' style/font looked OK with the ATV boxed logo, but it seems pretty lost - and already somewhat dated - on this Central design.
Can anyone remember the clock used by Central at the start? its just the ATV one rebrand, but how long did it last, I wonder why Central never really used clocks for most of its time on air.
I don't think Central EVER used a pres clock ?
They really were ahead of their time (Mulitiple puns not intended)
Ha ! Never seen that before, clearly the 'home brew' based generator (probably knocked up by ATV's engineering dept during night shifts) keyed over a Central rather than ATV slide.
Anything with a blue background was from the first on-screen look - the 1983 rebrand used a black background.

How many know there is more than one version of the LWT firewall ident? Big question has to be how many different version is there?
If your wonder how it can be different, well instead of the fun fair, there used different screen from the other 15 idents, but did all 15 get used or only a small selection.
But wasn't this the original logo? That's the second one.
It was amazing that Central had so many variations of its logo right from day one. As you say, the animated ident was the image that you posted, but the spectrum-hued disc shown on the end-cap, weather caption and clock was also prominent - not least as the logo used in in-vision continuity.
You'll also notice the 14-striped version pre-cursor to the 'cake', again in use from day one - in both plain white, or with colour-gradients in the 14 segments.
We tend to remember the simplicity of the final 6-stripe 'cake', but there was a heck of a variation beforehand. (But let's not talk about the diagonal stripes...)
It was amazing that Central had so many variations of its logo right from day one.
I imagine it was more a case of either: they weren't as strict with logo use as companies are today so they were just being produced or displayed willy-nilly. Or they were trying lots of versions to see which works best

Possibly.
I would suggest that it was more that someone had this wonderful idea for an ident, but then how do you represent it as a still? A white globe with a black shadow is not exactly a good image, but take the idea of the radiating colours and use those in the shadow area and you have something far better. Indeed that was the signage used on Broad Street, Birmingham.
But next you have print media, letterheads, business cards, internal stationery etc. A full colour logo would be darned expensive to print, and so again, how do you represent the globe with shadow? By the 14-stripe flat logo. Quite a good design that turned into a classic.
And the six stripe cake was probably easier for CG animation than the previous versions, which is why it supplanted them.

Something NEW:
The dates weren't wrong, per say. By 16 October 1983, the station finally started broadcasting to the UK, thats not wrong what was wrong is the belelf it took until January 1984 for the rebrand but if you look at that video it must have been Oct 83 because that when the UK started to broadcast the channel.
