*The cake is introduced
The "one to watch" launched around August 1985 for continuity purposes only with some junctions still using announcers in-vision. At this time, the ordinary Central ident was still being used at the start of programmes. It looked a bit odd linking from the cake to the globe, but it did happen. The networked cake production animation started in 1988 and lasted for around 12 months when it was decided by the network that only static prod caps were to be used. We obviously kept the animated cake locally. Hope this is helpful. By the way, the Central presentation caption for acquired programming was replaced with a Central cake end ident.

Scottish Television
# 1965-1985 you can thank MR STV! for these
An animated ident was introduced by 1965 in which the lion would spin inside a box , though this later modified as a simple zoom in following, according to some reports, a complaint from The Lord Lyon King of Arms, the man in charge of protecting Scotland's heraldry When colour began the lion continued to zoom but in pale blue. After the start of colour broadcasting, the lion rampant symbol was replaced within a year by a stylised 'STV' logo, which during its 15 year rein, change very little. The First version showed a zooming STV, by mid 70s it was updated with the letter comforming into the centre to make "STV". Throughout the 70s until 1985, this stylised was used as either a static caption, or form up from a pattered design that was supposed to represent tartan. Accompanying the look was a clock against a blue background with the white STV logo forming a pattern across the screen. The station's first theme was a specially composed piece by Geraldo entitled Scotlandia, which began each day's broadcasting - the theme continued to be heard until August 1985, this was accompanied At the climax by a slowly rotating '3D' STV 'illuminated name block' appeared. Heart pacakge: 5th Ocotber 1998
Yes, GMG regions and Border also introduced those in October 1998, about 11 months before the hearts. T
he GMG regions and Border also used the hearts breakbumper from October 1998, whereas the UNM regions
kept their regional ones until the hearts idents arrived, when they edited regional versions. Carlton, Central & Westcountry didn't initially use any of the hearts package till Carlton brought the star idents in for all the regions in September 1999, when they started using the hearts trailers and breakbumper. Personally, I'm surprised they didn't go for special Carlton ones, considering how different the idents were. Not sure what Channel were doing at the time and it's hard to find continuity on Youtube, especially as 'Channel TV' aren't good search words, but Scottish, Grampian and UTV never implemented any of the hearts look.

Mr Kite
Just a few things,

Granada - I'm sure you've missed out an extra striped ident here. There was the original basic white one from 1990. Then there was another bluish one from 1991, which was in turn replaced by another white one but which was far more polished then the older one. There were also seasonal idents (as seen on TV Ark) such as the Autumn one from 1990 and those flags ones which I don't think ever fully replaced the standard presentation. Also, there was the 'Granada in the North West' ident used before regional programmes which had an entirely different jingle.

LWT - there were two versions of Solari. The standard version you mentioned, where the letters form up one by one (and was used as the front cap for this era) and a shorter version where all the letters form up together, usually for a short and sweet continuity announcement. Again, these are on TV Ark and probably Youtube also.

Yorkshire - the spinning chevron from 1998 went entirely when the hearts came in. A new hearts-style ident was used for regional programmes which involved purple rotating chevrons.

Tyne Tees - I'm pretty sure the red 50th anniversary ident was 1999 not 1998. Tyne Tees' 1998 ident did continue to be used for local programmes, after the hearts idents were introduced. However, it was soon supplanted by a brand new ident sometime in early 2000 (the date is known but I don't have it at hand).

Meridian - I'm pretty sure we established that Meridian using its 1998 ident into regional programmes during the hearts area is an urban myth, largely due to a mistake on TV Ark. From what forumers from that area have said, along with some footage on the likes of Youtube, it near as definitely wasn't.

Hearts Era

GMG North (Granada, Yorkshire, Tyne Tees) - used both NPU promos and the heart break bumper from launch day. However, promos for regional programmes remained locally branded and often of a totally different design, which varied periodically and often between regions too. They all also took the idents when they finally arrived. Some GMG North hearts idents had a piano variant of the tune, which I understand was rare or non-existent in the rest of the country at the time. There was also the standard form up 'lines' version plus a 'hold' version unique to GMG North where the ident was already formed and the music started from about 30 seconds into the tune. When the network was rebranded to ITV1, most of this was abandoned and basically the 'lines' visual was used but with the music starting from about 30 seconds into the tune, like the old hold version. Very rarely, the lines version would appear with the original music. I witnessed this at least once during this period. At some point down the line, different hearts break bumpers started to appear. I think this may have been unique to GMG North but I'm not certain.

Border - also adopted the heart break bumper and NPU promos. Introduced the hearts idents when they arrived but seemed to use the lines one most or all of the time. In contrast to GMG North, they often used a menu with the evening's schedule on a hearts background, before leading into the immediate programme with an ident. Once GMG North took over continuity, they fell in line with GMG North's other regions.

LWT - As with GMG North, until they replaced the hearts with video wall idents. There were two generations and I think the dates are recorded.

Carlton regions (London, Central, Westcountry) - I've been quoted as saying these regions didn't use any hearts stuff until the star idents arrived, however, this is incorrect. When NPU promos arrived, these regions took them (or at least Carlton and Central did, not sure about Westcountry). The NPU design was also used for regional programmes and these were only ITV branded, as had been Carlton's policy since early 1998. The heart break bumper wasn't used initially but appeared in all three regions when the star idents arrived.

Anglia and Meridian - used the NPU promos but stuck their own logos on the top left of the end board. Basically, as the promo ran, there would be an ITV logo in the top left of the screen. However, on the final end board with the still of the programme and the information of when it was on, the ITV logo would be on another part of the screen by this time and the Meridian or Anglia logo was be where the ITV logo was in the top left. These stations initially ignored the heart break bumper and continued to use their own. However, when the hearts idents arrived, which they used, they introduced regionalised versions of the hearts break bumpers which also included their own names and station logos. Anglia and Meridian tended to use the lines version a lot more than GMG North. When they did use the film scene variants, it was always with the string music, not piano. Once GMG took them over, the piano variant was introduced, at least for a short while. However, watching Meridian in August 2001, they were either just using the lines ident, or an ident already formed up with no music, something GMG North never did. Also, once GMG took over, the practise of slapping a regional logo over NPU trailers ceased, although regional promos were still regionally branded and distinct design-wise, in line with GMG North.

HTV West - something of an enigma to me and it's difficult to find decent examples of presentation from the time. However, being owned by UNM and run from Meridian, it's story will be broadly similar to Meridian and Anglia, until Carlton took over, which further adds to the mystery, as this would've been a strange set up.

HTV Wales - again, owned by UNM, so largely followed Meridian's standards, despite having independent transmission. Like Meridian and Anglia, HTV Wales adopted NPU stuff but ignored the break bumper until the hearts idents arrived, where a regionalised version was implement, in line with Meridian and Anglia. When watching first hand (as I could just about recieve HTV Wales in Liverpool), they nearly always used the lines variant. The film sequence ones were used occasionally but always with the string music, not the piano. Like Meridian and Anglia, they liked to put their own logo on ITV trailers, however, there was a difference; whereas Meridian and Anglia only put their logos on the final end board of the promo, thus, not obscuring the ITV logo, HTV's logo appears throughout the promo, obscuring the ITV logo apart from on the final end board. The implementation of this policy was not always consistent and very occasionally NPU promos would go out with the ITV brand only. Once Carlton took over, the idents were edited to have Carlton's form ups and music (although the HTV end boards were maintained). Also, HTV branding on both NPU and regional trailers ceased entirely. All promos, network or regional, used the NPU design. The only giveaway of knowing if it was a regional promo was a regional url.

Channel - I know little, having seen hardly any presentation from this era. I assume they largely followed Meridian's practices but I can't be sure. They had different music to their hearts idents but also had a variant which had no ITV branding and a larger globe logo. I'm not sure what the score was here though.

Scottish, Grampian, UTV - didn't use any of the hearts presentation, to my knowledge.

That's slightly wrong, I think, as far as I can recall they never used the lines version aftter the ITV1 rebranding, for at least the last eighteen months or so it was pretty much always the static version where the logo had already formed and the music was just dawdling away in the background. Granada's presentation at that point had no effort put into whatsoever.

Mr Kite
^^ Well here's the evidence... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOpJIcQAnC4

That said, it appears the 'hold' version was also kept, so I was wrong that they only used the modified 'lines'. Both kind of roll into one to me due to how dull it all was.

Also I definitely saw it with the proper music at least once after the ITV1 rebrand. It's a clear and definite memory. I was just about an adult at the time, so it's not a hazy 'possibly a dream' memory of early childhood. Also, I distinctly remember my sister being in the room at the time and although she never paid as much attention to these things as I did, said something along the lines of "ooh, it hasn't done that for a while, has it?". I remember being hopeful that it was making a comeback, as what they were doing at the time as dire, as you say and it was fresh to see the lines ident with the proper music again.

It could easily have just been that one time in the entire 18 months or so, so it wouldn't surprise me if not another person interested in this sort of thing saw it. When it happened exactly, I'm not sure. It must've been some way into the final 18 months considering what my sister said and me thinking the same thing at the time but I don't think it was that close to the end either, so somewhere around midway, probably late 2001 or early 2002. I can't remember the programme and whether or not it was networked. This was on Granada but it's more likely than not that Yorkshire, Tyne Tees and Border got a similar thing.

Why it happened, I couldn't tell you either. I'd find it hard to believe it was on their presentation servers (or whatever the lingo would be), considering it clearly wasn't in general use. The only theory I can come up with is that they were having some sort of technical problem (not unknown to GMG North) and so the music came from a different source somehow.

There's a copy on TV Whirl, with the description: "The full version of the ITV hearts ident was still used after the ITV1 rebrand, but very rarely. Still, here it is in all it's *cough* glory! This was used right up until the end of regional presentation from the North."

From this page: http://www.tvwhirl.co.uk/granada.html

Also, the short formed up ident seems to have been in use right from the beginning, in Granada at least: http://youtu.be/f7lK7_bCjAY

That said, it appears the 'hold' version was also kept, so I was wrong that they only used the modified 'lines'. Both kind of roll into one to me due to how dull it all was.

Fair enough, certainly I don't think I ever saw anything but the static one for ages. Look on that TV Whirl page of that terrible mess of logos with ITV2 and ITV Sport as well. The presentation in that era was atrocious.

does this not prove the south also had the fuller version?

ITV1 rebrand in 2002.
when the network was rebranded to ITV1, most of this was abandoned and basically the 'lines' visual was used , Two version:
* The lines version would appear with the original music.
* The music starting from about 30 seconds into the tune, like the old hold version.

At some point down the line, different hearts break bumpers started to appear.
